U.S. Rep. Vito Fossella of New York, under pressure from Republican leaders after a pair of headline-grabbing scandals, announced on Tuesday he will not seek re-election in November to a seventh term.

Fossella was arrested earlier this month on charges of drunken driving and then it was disclosed he fathered a child, now 3, in an extramarital affair. [...]

Republican leaders, reeling from three defeats in special election contests to the House of Representatives in recent months and facing the prospect of losing more seats in November's elections, had made it clear that they wanted Fossella to step aside so they could begin to look for a possible successor.
