Snowbaggers?

First things first: Who knew snowmen could write, let alone make signs that say "Raise New Taxes? When Hell Freezes Over!"? Or that they had such a lame sense of humor?

Or that snowmen were overtaxed?

And where are the snowwomen? Why are they all white? Where's the diversity?

Are they getting compensated for their efforts? Do I detect a scandal brewing?

And they may want to rethink that whole death tax thing, since their cold little life spans are so short.

The display was the work of a mid-Michigan group called Common Sense in Government that is affiliated with the Tea Party movement.

This group might want to reconsider using the words "common sense" when their best idea is to go to all the time and effort to build a bunch of snowmen with signs to make their point... only to see them melt symbolically away.

Small town works to aid unemployed - lots of snow to shovel!

Just another small town using it's noggin to help out. Vaguely WPA reminiscent.

The recent heavy snows are presenting an opportunity for some unemployed people to make a little money.

The group Elkhart County Works Together tries to find temporary jobs to help the unemployed make ends meet. The group has come up with an idea to deal with the snow: provide a temporary income for those out of a job, which can help residents keep their sidewalks clear.

The group now has a list of 46 people who will shovel sidewalks for a small fee. It has set up a skills bank on the Web where the unemployed can list the different skills they have. Homeowners and businesses then can go online to contact them for temporary work.

"It could be a good opportunity to get more work, and at least a little bit more of an income," she said.

"The skills bank gives people the opportunity to generate money they need to meet their basic needs," said David Schrock-Shenk, founder of Elkhart County Works Together.

Obama Could Head Home for Presidents' Day

He must really love Chicago. But then again, I'm sure the weather in D.C. won't be much better.

President Obama "may return to Chicago for a home visit as early as mid-February, during a time when Illinois will be awash in celebrations marking Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday," the Chicago Tribune reports.

"Aides declined to comment on Obama's February schedule, but a source close to him said he could make his first presidential visit to Chicago as early as Presidents' Day weekend, when his daughters have a three-day break from school."
