(AP) Polish police say the infamous iron sign over the gate to the Auschwitz memorial site with the cynical phrase "Arbeit Macht Frei" - German for "Work Sets You Free" - has been stolen.

Padlo says the iron sign, which spanned a gate at the main entrance to the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland, was removed by being unscrewed on one side and pulled off on the other.
She says police have launched an intensive search. She says there are currently no suspects but police are pursuing several theories.

I've seen rumblings about this in the German and UK papers but never anything concrete.
BERLIN, May 8 (UPI) -- The White House can't confirm that President Obama will visit the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp this summer but Germany is making preparations.Almost every senior official in the German states of Thuringa and Saxony already appear to have been informed about Obama's upcoming visit, expected to be on June 5, The Times of London reported Friday.
Thomas Steg, a spokesman for the German government, said Obama might visit "historical places" related to the different aspects of World War II as well as places that have "biographical references" for his family.
Obama's great-uncle, Charlie Payne, was among the American soldiers who liberated a satellite forced labor camp close to Buchenwald in April, 1945.

[...] [I]t's understandable why the Czech Republic would have laws against Holocaust denial. Though I am waiting for the religious right to now come to the rescue of their poor soulmate. After all, he's a bigot being persecuted under hate speech laws. And you know how the religious right is all up in arms over European hate speech laws. Perhaps some intrepid reporter should ask the Concerned Women for America, Focus on the Family, and the Family Research Council how they feel about David Duke's arrest under hate speech laws.I'm having fantasies about the same thing happening to BushCo. A former POW companion of John McCain's, campaigning for him yesterday in Pennsylvania, invoked the holocaust in warning about Barack Obama. Colonel Tom Moe, who occupied the adjacent cell to McCain at the Hanoi Hilton, called Barack Obama a dangerous demagogue whose rhetoric could cause a new holocaust while speaking in Harrisburg at the Republican Party headquarters.So now we have two former POWs who apparently share PTSD symptoms.
The story was reported by David Spett of Capitaolwire (subscription only) yesterday following the controversial event:
"All we have to do is open up the history books and look at what the fruits of demagoguery are," Moe said. "When any individual or group tries to pick up a target of opportunity to blame social problems on ... the results can be catastrophic. And you can choose any point in history that you want."Asked whether Obama's statements could cause an event like the Holocaust, Moe responded: "If you like."

"Using the Holocaust as a political tool is absolutely reprehensible and, at best, tasteless, disrespectful and insulting," Amoros said. "McCain is no doubt a war hero. But in terms of character, Sen. Obama has demonstrated his character over and over again. He was raised by a single mother, put himself through school, and went to Harvard Law. Here's a guy who knows what it's like to struggle."
