California Voters Tricked Into Registering As Republicans With Pot Petition

Sound familiar? Of course it does, it's one of the things that the Breitbarts of the right claim ACORN did. They always copy us, badly.

Orange County authorities are launching an investigation into possible voter registration fraud after a local newspaper reported over a hundred cases of voters being tricked into registering as Republicans by petitioners who asked them to sign petitions for, among other causes, legalizing pot.

The Orange County Register reported last week that the Orange County District Attorney's office announced it would team up with the Secretary of State on the case, following a Register report that 99 written complaints were filed since March by voters who said they were registered as Republicans without their consent.

Another 74 voters reached by the Register said they, too, were unwillingly made members of the GOP.

Voicing their displeasure Tuesday with "Obamacare," Utah Republican lawmakers targeted for possible cuts a program that helps 450 low-income Utahns with HIV/AIDS pay for health insurance and life-saving medications.

The Ryan White Program was one of dozens reviewed Tuesday by the Executive Appropriations Committee under a normally perfunctory, monthly approval process for federal grant applications. The committee OK'd most of the applications but deferred approval of the $5.2 million Ryan White grant while they wait for more information at next month's meeting.

"It looks to me like we're funding a program providing insurance and [medical care] that is going to be covered under Obamacare: pre-existing conditions, lifestyle choices and things of that nature," said the Taylorsville Republican. "I'm just concerned about that."

Democrats objected to the delay, fearing it would effectively shut down the program, which is underfunded and no longer accepts new enrollees.

The program subsidizes the purchase of health coverage for AIDS patients with incomes below 250 percent of the federal poverty level, about $27,000 for a single-person household.

But most of the grant money is spent subsidizing expensive, life-saving anti-viral medications, which have turned what used to be a universally fatal disease into a manageable, chronic illness.

Mitchell Wade is a corrupt former lobbyist who plead guilty in 2006 to bribing former Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA). Well guess what: Now, according to Think Progress, he's helping “the government in investigating five other members of Congress,” according to a memorandum filed on Wednesday.

According to the sentencing memo:

[T]he other unnamed members are under investigation for “corruption similar to that of Mr. Cunningham.” Seth Hettena suggests two of those five include former Reps. Katherine Harris (R-FL) and Virgil Goode (R-VA). Hettena also reports that the sentencing memo contains hints of a bigger scandal to come:

Prosecutors drop tantalizing hints about an even bigger, ongoing investigation. Wade was debriefed in 2006 and provided “moderately useful” background information in another “large and important corruption investigation” that also has not yet resulted in any charges.
