Obama to offer 100-day recovery update
I'll see if we can grab the appearance in Billings.
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev., May 27 (UPI) -- Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada provided the backdrop Wednesday for a 100-day review of how America is doing under the two-year economic recovery plan.ADDED- No clue what's up with the syntax in this thing and I'm too damn tired to correct it. Consider this a blanket wtf of correction.
President Barack Obama was to highlight progress the country has made since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act during a visit to the base, the White House daily calendar said.
Obama also was to release a report from Vice President Joe Biden's recovery act oversight group, providing a glimpse of projects already started under the auspices of the act.
After a joint visit to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan planned to announce ARRA investments in American Indian housing and community development during a public appearance in Billings, Mont.

Obama Dines with Krugman, Stiglitz
My head hurts from trying to imagine GWB doing something like this, actually listening to the other side of a situation. Via Taegan-
Newsweek: "Mindful of his predecessor, Barack Obama seems to be trying harder to make sure he hears all sides. On the night of April 27, for instance, the president invited to the White House some of his administration's sharpest critics on the economy, including New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and Columbia University economist Joseph Stiglitz. Over a roast-beef dinner, Obama listened and questioned while Krugman and Stiglitz, both Nobel Prize winners, pushed for more aggressive government intervention in the banking system."

VIDEO: Paul Krugman Calls Out GOP Hypocrisy On Job Creation, Defense Cuts
By GottaLaff
In only 14 seconds, Krugman nails it:
Military correspondent David Axe has pointed out that it’s possible very few workers will lose their jobs because of Gates’s announcement. In fact, thousands of workers will likely be “snapped up for active production lines churning out F-16s, F-35s, C-130s and modernized C-5s for Lockheed, not to mention the prospect that industry rivals Boeing and Northrop might lure Lockheed workers for their own active production lines for the F-15, F/A-18 and others.”That didn't take long, now did it?

Bailout Cost Rises
As I heard Ed Schultz say this morning, we don't care how much it's going to cost, just fix it!
U.S. congressional budget analysts "raised their estimate of the net cost to taxpayers for the government's financial rescue program to $356 billion, an increase of $167 billion from earlier estimates," Reuters reports.
The new TARP cost projection "was raised due to changes in financial market conditions, new transactions and a shift in expected timing of payments."

Robert Gibbs hammered by questions about economy
By GottaLaff
Paraphrasing Robert Gibbs at the White House briefing just now, when asked if President Obama is taking on too much at once:
"If a house was on fire, would you choose which rooms to put out first, or would you try to save the whole house? 'Nah, I like the living room. Put that out.'"Meantime, Chris Cillizza has been Tweeting over and over about questions regarding Warren Buffett's statements:
More Buffett and more Buffett-dodging by Gibbs. Impossible for him to distance from Buffett but doesn't want to anger the "oracle" either.
Buffett comments have gotten WH off track...they don't want to answer a series of questions about the economy falling off a cliff.

Obama to speak to Ohio police recruits
I heard on of the talking heads say again this morning that the President is "overexposed". Well, you know what? Until he has one of these things and no one shows up, he's not "overexposed", m'kay?
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, who often says his $787 billion economic stimulus package will save or create millions of jobs, can point to at least 25 jobs saved in Ohio's capital.
Obama was to travel to Columbus on Friday to speak at the graduation ceremony for 25 police recruits who owe their jobs to the economic recovery bill he signed into law less than three weeks ago.
The recruits are part of a class of 27 who were laid off in January by Mayor Michael Coleman, a Democrat, before they could even start walking the beat. Coleman blamed city budget problems at the time.
But Coleman announced last week that the Justice Department had informed the city that it would get $1.25 million in stimulus money to pay the officers' salaries through the end of the year. Two of the recruits chose not to return.

Emblems to Stamp Projects Funded by the Stimulus Package
I like this alot, it gives form to where the money is going. Can't wait until the first time I see it in my community.
President Obama announced today that his administration will begin stamping an emblem on projects funded by the economic stimulus package so that people can easily recognize the effects of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
All projects will be stamped with the ARRA logo (short for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) and lists the recovery.gov website on the emblem.
(snip)
“We’re also making it easier for Americans to see what projects are being funded with their money as part of our recovery. So in the weeks to come, the signs denoting these projects are going to bear the new emblem of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Obama said. “These emblems are symbols of our commitment to you, the American people -- a commitment to investing your tax dollars wisely, to put Americans to work doing the work that needs to be done. So when you see them on projects that your tax dollars made possible, let it be a reminder that our government -- your government -- is doing its part to put the economy back on the road of recovery.”

Senator Kyl (R-AZ): Don’t blame us for deficit
Whatever they're drinking these days, it's alot stronger than kool aid.
Sen. Jon Kyl’s earmarks aren’t really earmarks, and Republicans aren’t really to blame for spending patterns during the Bush presidency.
That was Kyl’s message in a “Fox News Sunday” interview in which he defended his $118 million in earmark requests.
(snip)
“I can defend everything that I have recommended in the budget, and I would suggest that they’re not earmarks under the definition, because we have a specific definition,” said the Arizona Republican, whom the National Journal recently ranked as one of the most conservative senators.
And the soaring deficit — which got going when Bush was president and the GOP still controlled Congress? Kyl says you can’t put that on the Republicans since they’ve been out of power since 2007.
“I don’t think you can contend anymore ... that Republicans should be slapped on the hand for spending,” Kyl said. “I don’t think you can put that spending on Republicans.”

Poll: Politicians trusted more than business leaders on economy
Can you imagine? Sleazy politicians are seen as better on the economy than those stalwarts of the "capitalistic system"? Talk about a disconnect between Main Street and the Beltway. Man, if Santelli had any brains he'd be pretty worried right about now.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Call it a sign of the times. A new national poll indicates that when it comes to dealing with the economy, Americans have more confidence in the White House and Congress than Wall Street, the banks or auto executives.
And that may be one reason why a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Monday suggests the public opposes plans to provide more taxpayer dollars to banks and major domestic automakers.
Thirty percent of those questioned said they're confident Wall Street will make the right decisions to help the country overcome the current recession. Slightly fewer -- 28 percent -- said they had such confidence in bankers and financial executives. And 26 percent said they're confident that auto executives will make the right economic decisions.
But 53 percent of those questioned said they have confidence in Republicans in Congress making the right calls regarding the economy. About 66 percent said they have confidence Democrats, who control Congress, will make the right economic decisions. And 75 percent said they think President Barack Obama will make the right moves when it comes dealing with the recession.
Schumer to GOP Govs on stimulus- All or nothing
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! Video is Schumer on Morning Joe this am talking about plans to keep governors from playing politics with the stimulus money. Complete release here.
WASHINGTON, DC--Senator Charles Schumer released the following letter Tuesday urging the Obama administration to notify governors that they must certify acceptance of stimulus funding in full or not at all, rather than selectively approving and rejecting the law's various components.Video via FDL.
(snip)In recent days, a small minority of governors, mostly Republicans, have publicly weighed the possibility of foregoing certain emergency provisions provided under the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed last week by President Obama. I believe this prospect not only would undercut the stimulative effect of the recovery package, but also is inconsistent with a key provision included in the law passed by Congress. To protect the integrity of the recovery program, I urge the administration to issue implementation guidance clarifying that while any Governor may exercise his or her discretion to accept or reject the federal funds provided in the stimulus, no Governor should have the authority to arbitrarily adopt a select subset of the overall package.
