The 77-year-old journalism institution is being treated at a Boston hospital for a brain tumor diagnosed Sunday.
“I will be suspending my journalistic work for an indefinite but, God willing, not too lengthy period.”
In statement, says doctors will soon begin “appropriate treatment.”

As he traveled east on K Street, crossing 18th, Bono said "a black Corvette convertible with top closed plows into the guy. The guy is sort of splayed into the windshield.”Who said men in their 70s can't be president? Never mind:
Bono said that the pedestrian, who was crossing the street on a "Walk" signal and was in the crosswalk, rolled off the windshield and that Novak then made a right into the service lane of K Street. “This car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you just can’t hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.
He said he chased Novak half a block down K Street, finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block it and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blaring, until commuters behind Novak backed up so he could pull over.
Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.”
Novak, 77, has earned a reputation around the capital as an aggressive driver, easily identified in his convertible sports car.Especially the guy he hit.
In 2001, he cursed at a pedestrian on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th streets Northwest for allegedly jaywalking.
“’Learn to read the signs, [bodily orifice]!’ Novak snapped before speeding away,” according to an item in The Washington Post’s Reliable Source column.
Novak explained to the paper: "He was crossing on the red light. I really hate jaywalkers. I despise them. Since I don't run the country, all I can do is yell at 'em. The other option is to run 'em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that."
Two years later, the same column reported that Novak had gone to a racing school in Florida.
"I've wanted to be a race car driver all my life, and anyone who has watched me drive can tell you that,” Novak said.

The victim, a 66-year-old man, appeared somewhat incoherent, said the source who had seen the victim. The man appeared to have casts on his neck and back. The victim was X-rayed and a surgical team plans to evaluate him, the source said.

Journalist Robert Novak hit a pedestrian with his car in the nation's capital Wednesday morning, Washington police Lt. Michael Lockerman said.Novak continued driving, unaware he had hit the man, he told told reporters for WJLA-TV and the Web site Politico as he got out of a police car.
Wowzers, kids, he's nearly as confused as John Sidney McAddled!
"I didn't know I hit anybody," he said near the scene of the incident at 17th and K streets in northwest Washington. "A bicycle rider stopped me and said I had hit someone."
Wait. He hit a person with his car, and had to be told? No wonder he got punk'd yesterday. He has absolutely no idea what he's doing.
Novak said he was cited for failure to yield right of way.
"I feel terrible," said the journalist, a long-time Washington insider who works as a syndicated columnist.*

Prince of Darkness tells Fox News Channel: His report about McCain announcing his running mate this week may have been “a dodge” by the campaign to grab some headlines from Obama.
Ohhahaa! Haaaahahahaa! Omg, hahahaa! Snort! Psyche!
The conservative columnist goes on to say he’d gotten the tip from a “very senior McCain aide” and that the campaign “suggested I put it out” so he just posted something online.
Now he says he’s been told by “certain people” he may have been used. Adds if that’s the case, it’s “pretty reprehensible.”He's shocked! Shocked! Gee whizikers, what a pickle! This never happens in the big game-o'-politics. The press being used? By Republicans?? How could this have happened?

Aww, isn't that just fragrant with McBenevolence? I'm getting kinda misty. Oh, never mind. That's perspiration. It's 90 here today.Says Bob Novak in his column tomorrow, as noted in Playbook.
“After Sen. John McCain publicly repudiated his close friend and adviser Phil Gramm's comments about a ‘nation of whiners’ and a ‘mental recession,’ the two old political comrades patched up their relationship. Gramm apologized to McCain for his remarks. ... McCain told Gramm not to worry about the expected pitfalls of a campaign surrogate. Gramm will continue as an adviser and surrogate.”
Asked about Gramm's status, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, responded: "Our campaign has not announced any substantive status change to his volunteer post on the campaign."Hmm, sounds like an adviser and surrogate to me. But stop the presses! Is this yet another McSenior Moment? Hop on board the Flip Flop Express:
That volunteer post amounts to Gramm serving as a national co-chairman to McCain, offering him economic advice via cell phone and traveling with the candidate to such events as when he delivered a major tax-and-spending speech in Pittsburgh this past April.
But in addition to this behind-the-scenes role, Gramm has also done some appearances on behalf of McCain.
For example, last week, on the same day McCain said his old colleague didn't speak for him, Gramm was representing the GOP nominee before the Wall Street Journal editorial board.
Bounds said this part of Gramm's portfolio was coming to an end and that the former Texas senator would no longer be talking to the media or acting as a public surrogate on McCain's behalf.
Such a statement is the first official word from the campaign, but jibes with what two of McCain's other economic advisers, Doug Holtz-Eakin and Carly Fiorina, said about Gramm last weekend.
UPDATE: Obama's camp notes — and I should have pointed out — that Holtz-Eakin went further than saying that Gramm would no longer represent McCain. After much prodding in this PBS interview, Holtz-Eakin said Gramm won't even be advising McCain anymore.
Maybe it's Novakula who's having a senior moment. That reporting is decidedly contradictory. Or did I miss something?
