Obama became an iconic image of the 2008 presidential campaign filed a lawsuit against the US news agency the Associated Press (AP) on Monday.Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey and his Obey Giant Art Inc. claimed in the suit, filed in US District Court in Manhattan, that his use of an AP photograph to create the poster was not a violation of copyright law.
In his suit, Fairey acknowledged using an AP photograph of Obama from April 2006 to create the poster of Obama tinted in red, white and blue and staring into the sky above the word "HOPE."
But Fairey's lawyers said the artist had created an "image that creates powerful new meaning and conveys a radically different message that has no analogue in the original photograph."

This isn't biased, right? No, of course it isn't. Via MSNBC's First Read (which includes Chuck Todd as a contributor):
AP: “Officials: FBI investigates ACORN for voter fraud.” (But it’s voter-registration fraud, not voter fraud, right AP?)But now it's out there. As usual, the GOP puts out a lie, the corporate media perpetuates it, feeds into it, eats it up like it's Godiva chocolate, and the unsuspecting public are the ones who swallow it.
An FBI investigation means the RNC and McCain camp can now use the phrase "FBI investigation" in TV ads. ACORN yesterday released this statement: “ACORN has not been contacted by any federal law enforcement agencies. As it was ACORN that on its own accord brought these issues to the attention of relevant law enforcement officials, we are 110% confident that any legitimate review of ACORN by any law enforcement entity - be it local, state or federal -- will determine that the organization has conducted itself properly.”
And a few comments from the same site:Bob Owen, chief photographer of the San Antonio Express-News, notified the AP that the photos of two deceased soldiers, who died in Iraq on Sept. 14, were nearly identical. Upon examining the photos, Owens noticed that everything except for the soldier’s face, name, and rank was the same. The most glaring similarity, Owen told CJR, was that the camouflage patterns of the two uniforms were “perfectly identical.”
After inspecting the photographs, the AP confirmed that the images were, indeed, Photoshopped, and issued eliminations on the two photos.
The elimination reads:
The content of this image has been digitally altered and does not accurately reflect the scene. No other version of the photo is available.The photos were released by the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart in Georgia. Officials at the base could not be reached for comment.
“I’d like to think that the media holds itself pretty accountable and we try really hard to keep high standards,” Owen said. “Obviously the army, and the government, doesn’t see anything wrong with that [photo altering] at all.”
i heard one of these young gentlemens mother on the talk radio show today and it was truly sad. she said this was her sons 3rd tour of duty. she said she found out about his death from the news media and the government isn't giving her any answers on what really happened to her son. this is our government at its' worst and this is a dam shame how they are treating this young mans family.

At least MoveOn is trying to do something about it.On Saturday, the Associated Press (whose articles are published in thousands of newspapers nationwide) wrote a story about Barack Obama's vice presidential pick that sounded more like right-wing FOX than an unbiased news organization. Under the headline "Biden pick shows lack of confidence," the AP wrote:
The candidate of change went with the status quo. In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness—inexperience in office and on foreign policy...He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate—the ultimate insider...The Biden selection is the next logistical step in an Obama campaign that has become more negative..."1 (Emphasis added)
This isn't an isolated incident for the AP reporter who wrote this story, Ron Fournier—who was recently appointed as the AP's Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief. A recent study by media watchdog group Media Matters found that Fournier's presidential coverage has consistently smeared Democrats and favored John McCain.2
The AP is accountable to the local papers that print their articles. Can you write a letter to the papers in your area today? Tell them to contact the national AP to let them know that local readers' trust of the AP will be gone if Ron Fournier continues his biased reporting that smears Democrats and favors McCain.

But during the 2008 primary, Fournier wrote what amounted to a bunch of smear jobs on Barack Obama and the Clintons. Here are some of the "fair and balanced" pieces he wrote:Headline: "Sen. Hillary Clinton an Artful Dodger" Excerpt: "Slick Hillary? Former President Clinton earned the nickname 'Slick Willy' for his mastery in the political arts of ducking and dodging...His wife may not be as smooth, but Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is doing a passable impression of the ever-parsing former president."5
Headline: "Obama walks arrogance line" Excerpt: "There's a line smart politicians don't cross—somewhere between "I'm qualified to be president" and "I'm born to be president." Wherever it lies, Barack Obama better watch his step. He's bordering on arrogance."6
Headline: "Clinton's Politics of Pity" Excerpt: "Poor Hillary. After trying to save her sinking candidacy with awkward turns of flattery and sarcasm, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton resorted to a new tactic in Tuesday night's debate: self-pity."7
Meanwhile, Media Matters could only find one negative piece Fournier wrote about Republicans during the entire primary—and that was trashing Mitt Romney for beating John McCain in Michigan!8

In its investigation of the misleading accounts that initially surrounded Pat Tillman's death and Jessica Lynch's rescue the House Oversight Committee on Monday shed some light on the White House's press-management apparatus and the chummy relationship between Karl Rove and AP scribe Ron Fournier.It's good to have friends. Always be kind to your pals, because there's no telling how they'll repay the favor.
In the day's after Tillman's death, on April 22, 2004, the committee examined e-mails from the White House's communications team, including some exchanges with reporters.How patriotic and devoted. I- I think I'm tearing up. Who could ever fault a message like that?Commentators and reporters contacted the White House to offer advice. For example, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan e-mailed the White House’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, Peter Wehner, recommending that he “find out what faith Tillman practiced and have the president go by that church and light a candle or say a prayer.” Karl Rove exchanged e-mails about Pat Tillman with Associated Press reporter Ron Fournier, under the subject line “H-E-R-O.” In response to Mr. Fournier’s e-mail, Mr. Rove asked, “How does our country continue to produce men and women like this,” to which Mr. Fournier replied, “The Lord creates men and women like this all over the world. But only the great and free countries allow them to flourish. Keep up the fight.”
My head is spinning from the vastness of the bottomless sack of wrong that this government has produced.The 51-page examination reveals a White House more interested in crafting a good story around Tillman and Army Pvt. Jessica Lynch, whose capture and rescue in the early days of the Iraq war was dramatized in official White House and Pentagon pronouncements.
Our nation also has an inviolate obligation to share truthful information with a soldier’s family and the American people should injury or death occur....
That standard was not met in either Corporal Tillman’s or Private Lynch’s cases.
White House staff exchanged more than 200 e-mails concerning Tillman's death, according to the Oversight Committee report (.pdf).Okay, break over. Back to racism.
