Rachel Maddow is tops on the Tee Vee Machine when it comes to perceptive analysis, honest reporting, and investigative journalism. When she speaks, people should listen. She does her homework and she doesn't mince words.
Judging from the overall response on Twitter last night (I see thousands of tweets), she is spot on when she states that Democratic women (and men, based on what I saw), who candidates need in their corner, will withhold votes come 2010.
The Stupak amendment was a huge setback for abortion rights, as Rachel says in the video, and if it is not removed in conference, there will be a significant drop-off at the polls by the Democratic base.
Moving to the right is not the answer, in case that hasn't already been made obvious. Just ask Creigh Deeds. We didn't elect Barack Obama and our Congress members because we wanted to mimic the Republican party. We didn't celebrate 2006 and 2008 majorities just to maintain the status quo... or become GOP Lite.
Our side didn't come out in big numbers in last Tuesday's election. This kind of legislating won't exactly pump us up for 2010 either. Say bye-bye to donations, volunteers, donations, enthusiasm, donations, support, donations... Lukewarm turnout won't cut it. Blue Dogs won't cut it. Anti-abortion amendments won't cut it.

Yes, the Stupak amendment sucks- and I HIGHLY doubt that it will stick, or if it does, there will be SOMETHING else to come along that trumps it- because the Democrats would not go back in time to force women into back-alley abortions.
But I don't care WHAT the reason is- if the Democrats sit on their hands in 2010- and Warpublicans retake Congress, President Obama will not achieve a single thing from that point on- he could try to get a bill passed to put Gatorade in drinking fountains, and they will block him.
If Democrats sit on their hands, no matter the reason, in 2012, and the Warpublicans regain the Presidency? America is dead. Over and done, period. No exaggeration.
I am one of the men that was bitching up a storm over that amendment, especially since it came from a D in my own state- I and many others have told him he's done here, so that's taken care of for certain.
But please do not do what Democrats always do, and "sit out". It doesn't fix anything, and trust me- if you sit out... such an amendment will go under right-wing "care" to ban funding for ANY abortions, sex-education, or countless other women's (and men's) rights, as they'll insert their religious agenda into the political debate.
Never, ever sit out no matter how much you disagree with a single issue/bill/action. You only destroy the lives of others who MUST have Democratic rule- or face death and ruin.
I think we bitched about this last night but yeah the Stupak amendment is retarded considering that 1. it goes against the progress we've made as a country when it comes to womens reproductive rights and 2 . the government cant fund abortions for anything outside of rape, incest or life endangerment which means the issue that he brought up was already a non issue years ago and he just wanted to be a dick.
I agree with not sitting out elections. Completely.
However, I'm afraid that's exactly what will happen.
So sad... this is not the change I signed up for. So much for the home of rhe free.
We already have an amendment in 1976 called the Hyde Amendment that prevents government from funding for abortions. It is just unnecessarily to put the Stupak Amendment in there.
Any way I am glad the health bill in the house pass. By the way people; I don't want my money pay for people's unnecessary abortions. Some people abuse the system.
I don't want my money pay for people's unnecessary abortions.
Plans that offer abortion coverage will not be part of the insurance exchanges so people who buy insurance with their own money - no gov't [your] money - involved will not be able to get such coverage.
And the way I read it, the part that says no federal money can be used "to cover any part of the cost of any health plan that covers abortion" people who have employer-offered plans with such coverage (and most do) will not be eligible for subsidies or tax credits [federal money]. That's not just women - if you're male & that's the company plan, no help w/ high premiums for you. So the end result will be the insurance companies will strip all abortion coverage from their policies.
