This already has the Rushpublics screaming, as confirmed by Ellen Ratner on the radio just now, so it must be great news:
The White House is preparing to announce the selection of Robert Groves – director of the Survey Research Center and a professor at the University of Michigan – as the director of the U.S. Census Bureau. [...]
According to his resume on the Survey Research Center’s Web site, Groves was an associated director at the Census Bureau from 1990-92 and an expert in survey research, having authored books and papers on the topic. His research has focused on the impact of telephone samples on the precision of estimates, the causes and remedies for nonresponse errors in surveys and the understanding of why someone chooses to participate in a survey or not.
The AP reported that House Republicans were dismayed by the choice, with Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – the top GOP member on a House subcommittee overseeing the Census – saying “Presidnet Obama has made clear that he intends to employ the political manipulation of census data for partisan gain.”
Groves clashed with Republicans during his earlier tour with Census when he recommended the 1990 count be statistically adjusted to make up for an undercount of some 5 million people, many of them in urban areas.
