TBPNTOTV!!! Post Hillary concession speech edition

By GottaLaff (note: I changed the title after the segment was over. It no longer reflected Wolf's promos)
TBPNTOTV!!!* is discussing one of my favorite subjects: Democratic candidate Barack Obama!!! and Hillary's speech... and John McCain. Today's team consists of Gloria Borger, Ed Henry, and Candy Crowley!!! So many exclamation points, so little time! What's the buzz?

Wolf: The general campaign has begun. The latest CNN poll among registered voters shows Obama winning 49-46, a dead heat for all practical purposes. Why so close?

Gloria: Ignore the early polls, but McCain is a brand unto himself. He says he's distanced himself from Bush, saying Bush has mismanaged the war, and he's had time to establish his independent brand. Now we'll see the polls shift.

Candy: McCain has done well branding himself as a maverick. Also, it's been a long Democratic primary, Obama was beaten up pretty well. The numbers are shifting, it's a snapshot. Obama will get a bump, and it will go back and forth. McCain's done well, Obama has his work cut out for him.

Wolf: In a CNN poll of registered Democrats: Who would Clinton supporters support? There are 39% (Clinton voters + others) who aren't committing to Obama right now.

Ed: Obama has work to do, but it was bad to have this contested Democratic primary, letting McCain sit back. But, now, Obama will get a lift. Hillary went further than some Democrats thought, Obama will get a bump. And McCain looked rusty this week. Republicans are nervous: McCain couldn't read the teleprompter, he has his own problems.

Wolf: Among Republicans in that same poll, 44% still prefer someone other than McCain!

Gloria: They voted against him in the primaries! Now he's trying to go for Independents. But left out are the Republican base, evangelicals, conservatives who don't like him...

Wolf: He has a new ad, pretty effective, aiming at Independents [shows ad].

Candy: It shows experience and claims he's not a war monger. He says, I understand what war is.

Ed: In the last few races, the one with the better war record didn't win. They're gonna show they need a grown up in the White House, it didn't work for Hillary.

Candy: It's a broader audience now. It's a different time from those earlier races. Domestic issues count, and the Iraq War.

Wolf: Hillary's concession speech.

Candy: These were her supporters, they were enthusiastic. She said Obama's name 14x in a 30 minute speech, which was a lot, but they booed. But she went over that. There wasn't a lot of sorrow there, you can credit her speech, it was not a sad speech.

Ed: She should have sooner realized the history she was making.

Candy: She couldn't, nor could he run as an African American... too superficial. She talked about it all the time, as a subtext.

Gloria: It was a fine line for them. In the end, it was women for her, African Americans for him that put them over the edge in various elections.

Candy: In New Hampshire, she said "I am history". She did use it, increasingly. It was there.

Wolf: [plays clip of Hillary talking about standing with Obama, "yes we can"] Should she have done this earlier?

Gloria: Nobody was saying she should endorse him Tuesday night, but that she should have been more gracious. This speech was her do over, and she did a terrific job. Obama people couldn't complain. She changed her website immediately.

Wolf: Should Hillary be v.p.?

Candy: He can't look like he is shoved into this. He said, "settle down". This is MY process. There are some real serious doubts that this would be a positive move.

Gloria: It's about any v.p. candidate being judged against Hillary now.

Ed: With time, it'll be harder to pick her because it goes against his theme of change.

** OVPICYMIS!!!

Tim Pawlenty: I respect McCain, I have no designs on being v.p. but I'd be honored to ask and it would be difficult to turn down.

Tim Kaine: For v.p. , Obama has a lot of people to choose from.

Lindsey Graham:
Obama's all talk. John is is own man.

Kerry:
I give McCain credit for those instances of getting out of the 95% times he voted with Bush... McCain has not been there in countless places. Being right 5% of the time doesn't excuse you from the other 95%.

Charlie Rangel:
The v.p. choice has to be up to Obama. There has to be chemistry. But personally, I think a Hillary/Obama team would be an unbeatable ticket.
