[T]he Dem legislative response to the Citizens United decision will be a big, possibly defining, story.

And here’s an interesting little nugget about it: The bill that Dems are planning will have more bipartisan support than expected, a Dem leadership aide confirms.

The legislation is going to be introduced tomorrow by Dem Rep Chris Van Hollen and GOP Rep Mike Castle, the source says, and it is likely to ignite a battle over the influence of corporate and other outside money over our politics.

I wonder how many children are saying they want to be corporations when they grow up. Or if it's okay for same-sex corporations to marry. Or if there are corporations of color.

Crazed Birthers Discouraging Open Town Hall Meetings

Unintended consequences and such. Asswipes.

WASHINGTON -- Since an uprising at Rep. Mike Castle's "listening session" in Georgetown became a YouTube sensation, the Delaware Republican said about a half dozen of his colleagues have told him they're finished with town hall meetings.

It's no wonder.

During a discussion on health care last month, Castle got booed by the crowd when he vouched for President Barack Obama's citizenship, of all things. An unidentified woman, holding an American flag and what she said was her birth certificate in a plastic bag, had members of the crowd on her side, clapping and cheering, when she shouted that Obama was a citizen of Kenya, not the United States.

While the incident has received widespread attention since then, Castle said the most interesting reaction to him has been from members of Congress.

"They saw that and they said, 'That's enough for me, I'm not having any more town hall meetings,' " he said, laughing.

Moderate Republican Mike Castle (R-DE), who holds Delaware's only Congressional seat, hit a wall of right-wing rage during a town hall meeting in Georgetown, DE. The June 30 meeting, part of his health care "listening tour" across the state, came just days after Rep. Castle was one of just eight Republicans to vote in favor of the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The event rapidly devolved into a moblike atmosphere as conservative activists challenged Castle with the full spectrum of right-wing conspiracy theories.

Topics included:

• ‘Socialized Medicine’ Will Destroy The Nation ‘Faster Than The Twin Towers.’

• The Cap And Trade ‘Tax’ Will Kill The American Economy.

• Global Warming Is A Hoax.

• Global Warming, Like Darwinian Evolution, Is Just A Theory.

• The Swine Flu Epidemic Is A Conspiracy To Force AIDS-Infected Vaccines On The American Public.

• President Obama Is Not A Citizen Of The United States.

Rep. Castle and the other Republicans who supported clean energy reform have been branded “cap and traitors.” The Meetup-organized conspiracy theorists attacking them are being fed a constant stream of misinformation and incitement from Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Prison Planet, Americans for Prosperity, and the rest of the right-wing machine. Today’s conservative movement refuses to make any room for old school Republicans like Mike Castle.

The Party of No Sanity.

Listen to the crowd in this video. Good lord, they sound like those crazed, pitchfork-wielding, frenzied mobs out of an old Twilight Zone episode:

A woman gets up, holding a baggie containing her birth certificate, and unleashes a rambling, minute-long tirade about how the president is a “citizen of Kenya.” The crowd hoots and cheers when she’s done. Castle responds, diplomatically: “Well I don’t know what comment that invites. If you’re referring to the president, then he is a citizen of the United States.” That elicits roars and boos from the crowd, so Castle presses on. “You can boo, but he is a citizen of the United States.”

So here’s one of the least conservative members of the House GOP conference, in a state that gave the Obama-Biden ticket 62 percent of the vote, and he has to deal with the angry howling of birthers.

There's that good old fashioned Rushpublic patriotism in action. Remember that? Remember when they'd turn all red in the face and blast any Democrat who dared speak ill of Boy Georgie? After all, our military was in Iraq fighting for our freedom, and we'd been attacked by evildoers. Reverence of King Boy Georgie was mandatory.

How things have changed: Today, above all else, it's "do not support your president", not any more nosireebob, even in times of war, recession, and any other of the kajillion crises that exist... because he's ::dun dun dunnn:: from Kenya!

Moral of the story: Scream, whine, stomp your foot, and demand your country back if your president is black.

Kudos to Rep. Castle for standing up to them.
