Attack ad against health bill uses Democrat's young daughters

By GottaLaff

I've said repeatedly how desperate the GOP is now that health care reform is about to become a reality (fingers crossed). They're so desperate, in fact, that they're resorting to the worst, bottom of the barrel tactics, because that's all they have.

Case in point:

In southern Ohio, opponents of the bill have created a blowback effect by airing an ad targeting Rep. Steve Driehaus to stand firm as a "no" vote on the legislation. The ad prominently featured the congressman’s young daughters, in violation of the unwritten law that forbids dragging lawmakers' family members – most especially their underage children – into the fray.

That's right. They used innocent children, because they don't like the fact that it's legal to get an abortion, and ... well... ironically, and sadly...

...the ad wasn't even necessary:

[T]he ultimate puzzlement in the Driehaus controversy is why the spot ran at all: The freshman lawmaker had already signaled his intention to vote against the bill because it doesn’t have strong enough curbs on abortion funding.
All they had to do was go to his website:

But I'm firm in my commitment that I won't support legislation that provides federal funding for abortion.
Which it doesn't do.

But, hey, they (the Washington-based Committee to Rethink Reform) apologized, so... water under the bridge, right?

Committee spokeswoman Sarah Longwell said showing the children was a mistake and that the group was taking out another ad to apologize. She said the committee already apologized directly to Driehaus.

Too bad the spot was aired and the damage was done, huh? The apology won't erase that, nor will it do anything to alter the insensitive douchebaggery that is sure to make its way into the next news cycle, whether from the Committee or somewhere else.

House Democratic Fundraising Committee To Attack Patriotism Of GOP Members

By GottaLaff

Those Rushpublic tur'rists!

[T]he Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) plans to run ads on the July 4 holiday criticizing several vulnerable Republican members for their votes against the supplemental last week. [...] Glenn [...] Thrush provides the script:

Around here, we recognize Independence Day with parades … and picnics … maybe a few fireworks. But July Fourth is about more than that.

It’s about remembering those who fought for our freedoms. And those still fighting today. Congressman Lee Terry used to understand that.

When George Bush asked, Congressman Terry voted to fully fund our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. And, last year he said, quote, “We must give our military every resource it needs.”

Seems like Congressman Terry is playing politics now … Last month Congressman Terry voted AGAINST funding for those same troops. It’s true: vote No. 348 – you can look it up.

Versions of the ads are reportedly going to be run against seven Republican members: Reps. Ken Calvert (R-CA), Charlie Dent (R-PA), Jim Gerlach (R-PA), Dan Lungren (R-CA), Mike McCaul (R-TX), Lee Terry (R-NE) and Joe Wilson (R-SC). The DCCC insists that it is simply pointing out that “[w]hen George Bush was president, Republicans were quick to criticize anyone who voted against the supplemental bills that fund the troops as against the troops. But now that Republicans are trying to score political points, they have flip flopped on troop funding.”

This, however, is not really the case. [...]

Steve Benen writes, “As a substantive, policy matter, lawmakers can have completely legitimate reasons for voting against military spending measures, and opposition to these expenditures does not make one an unpatriotic terrorist sympathizer.”

On multiple occasions, ThinkProgress has criticized Republicans and conservatives for questioning the patriotism of those who were critical of the Bush administration’s policies — it’s not any more acceptable when Democrats question Republicans’ patriotism in a similar fashion.

Unless, of course, they do unpatriotic things like throw Tea Tantrums at which they compare their president to a Nazi, link the Census Bureau to Japanese internment camps, and/or undermine their president during a time of crisis.

VIDEO: Senate Republicans launch direct attack on Obama

By GottaLaff

This is pretty much all they know how to do: Attack. They have no constructive ideas of their own:

Republicans are increasingly trying to create a wedge between President Obama and Candidate Obama in a growing campaign to undermine his ambitious agenda.

In advance of his primetime news conference Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee unveiled an ad, entitled, “Change We Can Believe In?” that attacks Obama for flip-flopping on spending, taxes, earmarks and his handling of the lavish bonuses for AIG. The internet ad takes Candidate Obama sound bites and contrasts comments made by broadcast journalists suggesting the opposite.

Please note the insertion of a Keith Olbermann clip into the succession of sound bites. Ooooo, see? Even Keith has turned on Obama. That confirms it. Obama must be a really bad president.

These attacks represent a new front for Senate Republicans, who are building a financial and political infrastructure for the 2010 mid term elections, which they believe will be a referendum on the Obama agenda. In the past week, Senate Republicans have rolled out an organized assault:

• Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has accused Obama of trying to “Europeanize” the country.

• Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) said Obama’s budget will “bankrupt” the country.

• Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) believes the president is not standing up to Democratic leaders in Congress “and has let the culture of Washington continue, and it’s actually gotten worse.”

• Sen. Charles Grassley accused Obama of going back on his campaign promises on closing the revolving door for lobbyists and limiting signing statements.

• NRSC chairman John Cornyn says the administration is “engaged in a permanent campaign” and “seems to disdain” governing. [...]

The NRSC talking about change is as credible as Paris Hilton teaching Sunday school,” said Eric Schultz, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. [...]

The NRSC is not making an ad buy, but it sent the ad to reporters Tuesday morning, will be broadcast to the 3 million people on its e-mail list, and will likely get some attention on cable news shows.

So business as usual. No need to spend money when they can rely on good old cable to run and rerun their ads ad nauseam for free.

The Party of No = the Party of No Ideas = Fine by us.

A New Attack Ad Hits Obama

Ok, it's a joke. And a funny one, put together by my pal Bruce Kluger.

But Rush Limbaugh is already puking out his piehole about the "Obama recession"--I assume when there are no all-you-can-eat brunches available at any Denny's within 150 miles--so not so far from the truth now is it...
