Lawmakers Released After Arrest at Darfur Protest

This is a quick update to my previous post:

The five liberal House Democrats arrested Monday morning outside the Sudanese Embassy during a protest of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur have been released.

That was from Roll Call, which is subscription only. I dug up a few more details:

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern has been freed from a Washington, D.C. jail after spending three hours locked up for protesting the Darfur genocide outside the Sudanese embassy.

“They just sprung me. It was only 3 1/2 hours. It wasn’t bad at all,” McGovern told the Herald moments after his release.

The Worcester Democrat was pinched along with fellow U.S. Reps. John Lewis (D-Georgia), Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), Donna Edwards (D-Md.) and Keith Ellison (D-Minn.). Several activists were also arrested, including noted civil rights leader John Lewis.

“It was a privilege to share a cell with him,” McGovern said of Lewis.

Aww, they bonded.

Egad, I hope they don't get waterboarded. After all, BushCo set the global standard, didn't they now? Then again, that still wouldn't stop the Rushpublics from insisting on how effective and legal and necessary it is:

Five Democratic House members are arrested at a Darfur protest at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington.

The five: Reps. Woolsey, McGovern, Edwards, Ellison, Lewis

Here are more details:

Humanitarian leaders and five U.S. lawmakers, including Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison and Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards, were led away in handcuffs Monday from the embassy after crossing a police line.

The activists are urging world leaders to take a stand against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's decision to expel 16 aid agencies from Darfur.

Snark aside, I hope this is resolved quickly and without further incident, and that they have a safe trip home.
