Oklahoma abortion law gets struck down

Sounds reasonable, but....

Another Oklahoma abortion law was ruled Friday to be unconstitutional.

The 2009 law was intended to prevent a mother from picking the gender of her child through abortions.

It made it illegal for a doctor to do the procedure if the doctor knew a woman’s sole reason was she wanted a baby of a different sex. Attorneys said worldwide most abortions done for gender reasons involve female fetuses.

Oklahoma County District Judge Dan Owens ruled Friday that legislators put into the law multiple subjects unrelated to its underlying purpose. He ruled the law violated a requirement in the state constitution that legislation cover a single subject.

The law also would have required doctors to report detailed information about abortions to the state Health Department, including the age, marital status and education level of patients. An opponent of the law, the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, said the requirements would have cost more than $250,000 a year to implement.

"The government has no business running a grand inquisition into the private lives of Oklahoma women,” said Jennifer Mondino, an attorney for the center, which filed the legal challenge to the law on behalf of two Oklahoma women.

Pro-life groups are accusing Planned Parenthood of taking advantage of the humanitarian catastrophe in Haiti to promote a pro-choice agenda.

Days after the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake, the International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) sent out a fundraising appeal to help rebuild two clinics that were destroyed in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

The clinics are operated by PROFAMIL, a "member association" that provides "sexual and reproductive health services," including abortions. The fundraising post said that PROFAMIL is setting up a temporary stationary clinic and mobile-health units to provide "basic first aid, as well as obstetric care and family planning."

Outrage over the appeal quickly spread through the pro-life community and its related blogs. Rita Diller, national director of Stop Planned Parenthood, said on LifeSiteNews.com that the group was "using the disaster and the suffering in Haiti to raise money to perpetuate itself."

Ahem, that would be the point lady, they're just trying to rebuild what was already there providing services. Asswipes.

Senate Passes Women’s Health Amendment

I am late to this due to my schedule today, but if you missed it:

Breaking a three-day stalemate, the Senate approved an amendment to its health care legislation that would require insurance companies to offer free mammograms and other preventive services to women.

The vote was 61 to 39, with three Republicans joining 56 Democrats and the two independents in favor.

The Republican senators voting in favor were the two women from Maine, Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins, and David Vitter of Louisiana. Among Democratic senators, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Ben Nelson of Nebraska opposed the proposal.

The Democrats’ legislation had already contained requirements that insurers cover a wide range of preventive care. The amendment, put forward by Senator Barbara Mikulski, Democrat of Maryland, goes further, mandating coverage for a broader package of services for women.

Ms. Mikulski’s proposal was countered by a Republican amendment put forward by Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska.

Ms. Murkowski’s amendment was defeated on Thursday by a vote of 59 to 41, with Mr. Nelson joining all 40 Republicans in favor of it and all other Democrats united in opposition.

Study: Abortion doctors, clinics 'routinely targeted'

WASHINGTON — An abortion-rights group said Wednesday that doctors and clinics that perform abortions in six states "are routinely targeted" for legal and physical harassment, including death threats, and called on the Justice Department to do more to protect clinic workers.

In a report, the Center for Reproductive Rights said that women seeking to terminate pregnancies in those states face a dwindling supply of providers as threats and intimidation take their toll.

Nancy Northup, the center's president, said the number of physicians and clinics providing abortions has fallen by 25 percent since the 1990s.

Two of the states, Mississippi and North Dakota, have only one abortion provider. The other studied states were Missouri, with three, Alabama, with seven, Pennsylvania, with about a dozen, and Texas, with about 40.

Even in states with multiple clinics, however, most are clustered in urban areas, leaving women in less populous regions to travel long distances for the service.

WICHITA, Kan. - A man charged with murdering Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller has been advocating through mailings from his jail cell that such killings are justifiable.

Scott Roeder sent Oregon anti-abortion activist Linda Wolfe a pamphlet that lauds Paul Hill, the convicted murderer of an abortion doctor, as an "American hero," and includes examples of Hill's writings about how it is justifiable to kill abortion doctors.

The Rev. Donald Spitz, whose anti-abortion group Army of God celebrates Hill's teachings, says he provided Roeder with seven of the pamphlets upon Roeder's request.
