Gramm-pa McCain, Barack Obama share a stage

UPDATE: IWRC* Palin will be on SNL this Saturday. They're sure getting a whole lot of free air time these days.

I'm watching the Al Smith charity event at which both Gramm-pa McCain and Barack Obama did "stand up" routines. Gramm-pa's material was well-written, and Obama laughed heartily when he delivered his lines. However, when Obama joked, and the camera caught Grammps, he was clearly forcing a smile and dutifully lifted his hands to clap twice as the rest of the audience applauded with gusto. Later, he joined in with more enthusiasm.

Here's a sample of some of the jokes (missed the set up, so the beginning is not worded well):

• At the Waldorf Astoria, from the door step, you can see all the way to the Russian Tea Room.
• Barack is Swahili for That One.
• My greatest strength: My humility. My greatest weakness: I'm a little too awesome.
• I've never put lipstick on a pig, a pitbull, or myself. Rudy Giuliani, that one's for you.
• My middle name is actually Steve. That's right: Barack Steve Obama.
• Rupert Murdoch actually accused me of fathering 2 African American children in wedlock.

He took a few swipes at Gramm-pa's 9 homes, too. And he poked fun in a self-deprecating way, at all the "elitist" qualities that he's been tarred with.

He also paid tribute to Tim Russert, which was a sweet touch. He got serious for a few minutes about the hard times we're going through. Bill Maher thought he should have kept it funny, especially because Grammps didn't get into issues. I disagree. But he thought they were both good.

As a comedy director, I have to admit, it's obvious to me that Obama is not as comfortable delivering one liners as is Grammps. But luckily, presidents don't have to do stand up routines.

At least not intentionally.
