Republicans soften opposition to financial reform

By GottaLaff

Just when I thought the Party of No was trying to make financial reform hit a brick Wall St., I see they're maybe, possibly, kinda, sorta relenting a teeny weeny tad:

(Reuters) - Republican lawmakers on Tuesday took a more conciliatory tone toward Democratic proposals to crack down on Wall Street as the U.S. Senate delayed debate on a financial reform package until next week.

The change in rhetoric could signal the two sides are moving closer to a deal after months of wrangling over how to overhaul regulations in the wake of the financial crisis.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd said lawmakers have reached agreement on 80 to 90 percent of the reform bill.

"We are all optimistic that this can be fixed," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

Good ol' reliable, reassuring Mitch McConnell, he's always been my go-to guy for hopey changey stuff.

Color me skeptical, but it's hard to believe the G No P softening on anything. Stalling, maybe. Kvetching, definitely. Obstructing, absolutely. Softening? Mmmmnotreally.

However, they may have finally realized how quickly and drastically America will turn on them should they continue to pal around with the very corpobots who transformed us into the United States of the Homeless.

Quickie: Dodd calls for Lehman Bros. investigation

By GottaLaff

Today's Quickie:

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd, D-Conn., is calling for a federal investigation into the "Lehman situation" and other companies that may have fudged their balance sheets, contributing to the financial crisis.
About time. I can't wait to see which Congress members defend Lehman.

That was today's Quickie. Was it good for you?

Senators near deal on consumer agency

By GottaLaff

http://finickypenguin.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/compromise.jpg

I'm surprised when anything gets done these days:

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) is nearing a deal with Sen. Bob Corker (R.-Tenn.) to propose the creation of a consumer protection authority housed inside the Federal Reserve, according to three sources familiar with the negotiations.

This would be whatcha call a major breakthrough in negotiations.

Originally, Chris Dodd and Bob Corker wanted an independent agency, one that could write, as well as enforce, rules that would protect consumers.

This is the compromise:

The proposed regulator would be appointed by the president, with a dedicated source of funding and the power to write rules, but enforcement of those rules would remain the responsibility of banking regulators.

Dodd: Obama will be elected to a second term 'overwhelmingly'

By GottaLaff

http://www.usbacklash.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/chris-dodd-obama.jpg

Doddism:

Appearing on Imus in the Morning, [Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) ] rejected a comparison between Obama and Jimmy Carter and said Obama will be more political successful.

"No, no, no. You're wrong on that," Dodd told Imus of the Carter comparison. "That's a mark we'll put it down. This man will be reelected and reelected overwhelmingly."

Well then, it's a done deal.

This doesn't bode well for health care reform

By GottaLaff

Debbie Downer:

Reports that health care reform talks are breaking down were apparently true.

Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) now says Democrats "should take a break of up to six weeks in the health care debate to allow the caucus to regroup and refocus on how to move a bill forward," reports CQ Politics.

Dodd said it will be up to President Obama to get health care legislation back on track, perhaps by taking "a breather for a month, six weeks, and quietly go back and say the door's open again."
Yeah, good idea. Everyone in Congress will be refreshed and jump right in... and health care reform will pass in record time.

Right along with immigration reform.

Obama Reaches Out, but Not to Nelson or Lieberman

By GottaLaff

Roll Call is subscription only, but gives us this interesting nugget to go with their post title:
In the wake of Senate passage of the health care reform bill, President Barack Obama on Thursday called a dozen Senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), according to a list provided by the White House.
Here's an idea of how to reach out to Traitor Joe: Pull his chair(manships) out from under him.

Chris Dodd Cleared by Senate Ethics Committee

By GottaLaff

http://blog.4president.org/2008/WindowsLiveWriter/IMG_1382.jpg
I get e-mails:
Ever since political opponents started making false accusations about my mortgages, I've said that Jackie and I did nothing wrong.

Today, I'm pleased to report that the Senate Ethics Committee has agreed, officially clearing me of any wrongdoing.

Here is a portion of the statement that I gave to reporters this afternoon. I hope you'll read it and share with other supporters.

After a year-long investigation in which it deposed witnesses and pored over 18,000 pages of documents, the bipartisan Ethics Committee has concluded that we violated no rules when refinancing our mortgages. There was no "sweetheart" or special deal; the allegations are and have always been false.

...

I hope that today's dismissal will go a long way towards restoring the bond of trust and confidence that I've worked long and hard to build with the people of our state. I want you to know it's a relationship I have never, and would never, take for granted.

And now that the facts have been aired and the lessons learned, it's time to move on. I'm going to continue fighting for you - humbled, wiser, and always proud to serve the people of Connecticut.

I'm looking forward to continuing my fight on behalf of the people of Connecticut - and to a campaign based on real issues, not political smears.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support - and I hope I can continue to count on it going forward.

Sincerely,

Chris Dodd

VIDEO--Protesters: Euthanize ailing Chris Dodd with pills, whiskey

By GottaLaff

From the Dep't. of Crossing the line:

This from the "pro-life" party. More like pro-suicide:

"Barack Obama clearly said, all you should do is take a painkiller. How come we just don't give Chris Dodd painkillers?" shouted one man. "Like a handful of them at a time! He can wash it down with Ted Kennedy's whiskey -- oh excuse me, scotch!"
Snide jokes about Chris Dodd's and Ted Kennedy's struggles with cancer are okay, but "they acted stupidly" monopolizes 400 news cycles. Oh, and let's not forget all that cogent analysis of President Obama's unAmerican beer preferences.

How soon until we the media reports on the cretin in the video ? ::cricket cricket:: Yeah, I thought so.

They should play that video at ever town hall meeting as loudly as possible, right after a few words from a pro-public option cancer patient. Then let's see how gutsy and loud the Corporate Tea Tantrumers are.

Big h/t: Connecticut Man1 who shot the video!

Chris Dodd to announce he has prostate cancer

By GottaLaff

http://bobmccarty.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/christopher_dodd.jpg

UPDATE, e-mail from Chris Dodd:
I wanted to let you know that I've been diagnosed with an early stage of prostate cancer.

This diagnosis is very common among men my age. In fact, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their life.

Luckily, a routine test allowed my doctor to catch it at a very early stage, and my prognosis is excellent - we expect a full and speedy recovery.

I want to assure you that I'm feeling fine. As you know, we've been working hard to pass health care legislation and reform our nation's financial system to protect consumers, and that hard work will continue.

After the Senate adjourns at the end of next week, I'll have surgery to remove the cancer. After a week or two of recuperation, I expect to be right back to work.

After all, as a Member of Congress, I have great health insurance. I was able to get screened, seek the opinions of highly skilled doctors, consider all the available options, and choose the treatment that was right for me.

And I know you'll agree that every American deserves the same ability.

We have health care legislation to pass - and an election to win. And I can’t thank you enough for your support.

Sincerely,

Chris
Tweet from CBS:

Senators Dodd, Conrad allegedly told of Countrywide favors

By GottaLaff

http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/scooby.jpg

Ruh-roh:
Despite their denials, influential Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd were told from the start they were getting VIP mortgage discounts from one of the nation’s largest lenders, the official who handled their loans has told Congress in secret testimony.

Both senators have said that at the time the mortgages were being written they didn’t know they were getting unique deals from Countrywide Financial Corp., the company that went on to lose billions of dollars on home loans to credit-strapped borrowers. Dodd still maintains he got no preferential treatment. [...]

Robert Feinberg, who worked in Countrywide’s VIP section, told congressional investigators last month that the two senators were made aware that “who you know is basically how you’re coming in here.”

You don’t say ’no’ to the VIP,” Feinberg told Republican investigators for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press.

The next day, Feinberg testified before the Senate Ethics Committee, an indication the panel is actively investigating two of the chamber’s more powerful members:

  • Dodd heads the Banking Committee and is a major player in two big areas: solving the housing foreclosure and financial crises and putting together an overhaul of the U.S. health care system. A five-term senator, he is in a tough fight for re-election in 2010, partly because of the controversy over his mortgages.
  • Conrad chairs the Budget Committee. He, too, shares an important role in the health care debate, as well as on legislation to curb global warming.
  • Both senators were VIP borrowers in the program known as “friends of Angelo.” Angelo Mozilo was chief executive of Countrywide, which played a big part in the foreclosure crisis triggered by defaults on subprime loans. The Calabasas, Calif.-based company was bought last July by Bank of America Corp. for about $2.5 billion.

Mozilo has been charged with civil fraud and illegal insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission. He denies any wrongdoing.

Asked by a House Oversight investigator if Conrad, the North Dakota senator, “was aware that he was getting preferential treatment?” Feinberg answered: “Yes, he was aware.”

Referring to Dodd, the investigator asked:

And do you know if during the course of your communications” with the senator or his wife “that you ever had an opportunity to share with them if they were getting special VIP treatment?”

    “Yes, yes,” Feinberg replied.

Bryan DeAngelis, Dodd’s spokesman, said Feinberg has repeatedly made allegations of special treatment that were not true. [...]

Conrad’s spokesman, Chris Gaddie, said Monday that the senator “never asked for, expected or was aware of loans on any preferential terms” and has “worked overtime to set the record straight.” [...]

Two internal Countrywide documents in Dodd’s case and one in Conrad’s appear to contradict their statements about what they knew about their VIP loans.[...]

Conrad initially said in June 2008, “If they did me a favor, they did it without my knowledge and without my requesting it.”

The next day, Conrad changed course after reviewing documents showing he got special treatment, and said he was donating $10,500 to charity and refinancing the loan on the apartment building with another lender. He also said then it appeared Countrywide had waived 1 point at closing on the beach house.

There is much, much more here.

Dueling health care VIDEOS: Ted Kennedy v. "HAARM"

    By GottaLaff

SEIU Healthcare e-mailed me a video today. It's priceless. But first, please take a look at the one that Chris Dodd e-mailed:

My good friend Ted Kennedy has made it his life's work to make sure every American has quality, affordable health care. I am proud to be his partner in that fight.

Senator Kennedy filmed an ad for my campaign about the work we are doing together...
Now take a look at this spoof of a typical Rushpublic brainstorming session:

HAARM is what we imagine is happening behind the scenes of the anti-health care reform movement. An organization dead set on torpedoing any efforts to fix America's broken health care system.

Obviously, HAARM isn't real, but the stuff they say in the video really does come straight out of the Republican playbook. And, with a debate as serious as reforming health care, taking your talking points from Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh is simply unacceptable.
    We better win this duel.

UPDATE: To help us win, go here:

The fight for a health care system that works for every America has already begun. But it won't be easy. If we’re going to succeed, members of Congress need to hear from you.

Calling Congress is easy and very effective. You don't have to be an expert, just a concerned citizen who knows we need change.

    Go.

    Chris Dodd Backs Gay Marriage

    By GottaLaff

    Good on ya, Chris:
Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) issued a statement backing same sex marriage because his "young daughters are growing up in a different reality than I did."

Ben Smith: "One of the remarkable things about the speed of change in the marriage issue is that it's gone, in a year or two, from being something that could only be supported by people without higher ambitions to something embraced amid a tough reelection fight."
So what's taking everyone else so long? How hard is this? Oh yeah, I forgot. John Ensign's marriage was destroyed by Teh Gays. That's gotta be it.

Dodd says 'strong, vibrant' Kennedy wants to return to Senate

    By GottaLaff

    http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/06/09/art.senkennedy.0609.gi.jpg
    Roooaaaar!
Sen. Christopher Dodd told a news conference Tuesday that he dined on Sunday night with Democratic colleague Sen. Edward Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer and has been away from the chamber for months.

"He was strong; he was vibrant," Dodd said of Kennedy, who led the drafting of an initial comprehensive health care reform bill despite his illness. "I very much hope Sen. Kennedy will be back."

Dodd has assumed Senate command of the health care issue in Kennedy's absence, and he said Tuesday that Senate Democrats are missing the knowledge and passion of their veteran colleague.

"He wants to come back and be a part of this, obviously," said Dodd, a close personal friend of Kennedy. Still, Kennedy insists that Congress should act on health care now, whether or not he can be there, according to Dodd.

"He is absolutely adamant that we go forward," Dodd said.

We need him there... badly. Come back, Senator Lion. And please stay well.

    VIDEO: My Pet Goad

    By GottaLaff

Sean Hannity of Fox News tries to goad Republican challengers Sam Caliguiri and Rob Simmons into calling Senator Chris Dodd "a lying weasel" on national tv. One gladly took the bait, one did not. Hannity got the idea from that wonderful publication, the New Haven Register.
Who can spot the real lying weasel?

Kudlow hearts CNBC more than the U.S. Senate

    By GottaLaff

Larry Kudlow has thought the better of it (original post):
CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow announced on his show that he will not mount a campaign to take on Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), CQ Politics reports.

Said Kudlow: "This evening, I'm letting the world know that I am not running for the U.S. Senate. And here's why: in my heart I know that I belong right here at CNBC."
This CNBC? To thine own, er, heart be true.

Larry Kudlow Considering Running Against Chris Dodd

    By GottaLaff

    http://www.greatertalent.com/backend/speakers/351/Kudlow,%20Larry.jpg
The Tee Vee Machine is spawning candidates:
Jennifer Rubin at Commentary: "Here at CPAC a well placed source with knowledge of the Republican Senate Committee plans tells me that Larry Kudlow is 'considering' a Senate run against embattled Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd. Dodd's approval ratings have been plummeting in light of the Friend of Angelo scandal and the ongoing effort to stonewall local and national media... Also on the horizon is former Congressman Rob Simmons. So stay tuned: we might just have the most entertaining and most educational senate race in a long time."
Will Cramer be next? That would be the loudest, most annoying campaign ever.

    Congress strengthens exec pay limits

    By GottaLaff

    http://scottjberry.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/mrmoneybags.jpg
    Thank you, Chris Dodd:
President Barack Obama's economic team tried to keep Democratic allies negotiating the stimulus bill from limiting paychecks for bank executives at banks in need of a bailout. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and economic aide Lawrence Summers failed.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, inserted strict rules into the $787 billion economic stimulus package over the White House's objections. Dodd's limits on bankers' bonuses are significantly more aggressive those sought by Obama or Geithner in recent days, with much fanfare.

Dodd, D-Conn., said the restrictions - an executive making $1 million a year in salary could receive only $500,000 in bonus money, for example - are necessary if Obama plans asks Congress for more money to save the financial sector.

"It will never happen as long as the public perceives that there are people getting rich," Dodd said in an interview. "Save their pay or save capitalism."

That tone among Democrats flavored much of the discussion about how to write the stimulus bill, which the president could sign as early as Monday. Despite direct appeals from Geithner, Summers and White House officials, Democrats didn't budge, according to administration officials.

"They can't blame the Democrats for coming up with nothing. "

    By GottaLaff

I asked down thread if the Democrats had a comeback for the Gigantic Republican Economic Rape of the American People. I got my answer:

Dodd Proposals A Solid Political Step For Democrats

Democrats now have a counter-proposal, something for the base to rally around and its presidential candidates to embrace.

Significantly, the ball now bounces back to Sec. Paulson and President Bush. They can't blame the Democrats for coming up with nothing.

Mere politics -- how we hold our leaders accountable -- has asserted itself in the crisis.

Wall Street's nervous; they want action quickly.

Courtesy of the Politico, read the Dodd bill here.

That was nice to come home to. Being away from the events of the day while at work makes me a little crazier than usual.

Obama called Pelosi, Reid, others about economy

    By GottaLaff

Barack Obama made a phone call or eight:

ABC's Sunlen Miller reports: Since yesterday, Sen. Barack Obama has spoken on the phone with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Banking Committee chairman Chris Dodd, Rep. Barney Frank, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Ralph (sic) Emmanuel, former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton about the economic situation and the plan for dealing with it.

Spokesperson Linda Douglass says that the conversations were about devising a "quick, bipartisan solution" to the economic crisis [...]

"As of now, the Bush administration has only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan," Obama said. "Even if the U.S. Treasury recovers some or most of its investment over time, this initial outlay of up to $700 billion is sobering. And in return for their support, the American people must be assured that the deal reflects the basic principles of transparency, and fairness, and reform. We can’t allow this to happen again. They have run this government, they have run this economy into the ground. We’ve got to make sure that we lift if back up, but we’ve got to have some rules in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again."

Obama set out seven principles (several of which he has regularly mentioned on the campaign trail) for what he would like to see included in the government's bailout plan.

      • No blank check. If we grant the Treasury broad authority to address the immediate crisis, we must insist on independent accountability and oversight. [...]
      • Rescue requires mutual responsibility. As taxpayers are asked to take extraordinary steps to protect our financial system, it is only appropriate to expect those institutions that benefit to help protect American homeowners and the American economy. [...]
      • Taxpayers should be protected. This should not be a handout to Wall Street. [...]
      • Help homeowners stay in their homes. [...] We cannot have a plan for Wall Street banks that does not help homeowners stay in their homes and help distressed communities.
      • A global response. As I said on Friday, this is a global financial crisis and it requires a global solution. [...]
      • Main Street, not just Wall Street. [...] I call on Senator McCain, President Bush, Republicans and Democrats to join me in supporting an emergency economic plan for working families [...]
      • Build a regulatory structure for the 21st Century. While there is not time in a week to remake our regulatory structure to prevent abuses in the future, we should commit ourselves to the kind of reforms I have been advocating for several years. We need new rules of the road for the 21st Century economy, together with the means and willingness to enforce them.
