Barney Frank gets a high-altitude haranguing on health care

WTF were the flight attendants doing? I really like Barney's partner.

Barney Frank has enemies, even 30,000 feet in the air.

Flying back to Boston from LA yesterday, the congressman was assailed by a pair of ophthalmologists upset about the health care reform bill. An argument ensued that prompted some passengers to wonder if the plane might be forced to land.

(snip)

The problem started soon after the ophthalmologists - two sisters on their way to a conference in Boston - boarded the Virgin flight. When they discovered that Frank was sitting nearby, the women loudly dissed the landmark health care bill as an "Obamanation."

(snip)

"They wanted to talk to me, but I apologized and said I like to read and watch on planes," Frank told us today. "They began to talk louder and that's when Jimmy (Ready) said, 'If you're trying to be bitchy, you're doing a good job."

Needless to say, the women didn't appreciate the remark, and things got heated. (Attempts to locate or ID the women were unsuccessful.) Sexton, who's an HR director for the UK-based retailer All Saints Spitalfields, said flight attendants weren't working hard enough to defuse the situation, so she got involved.

"The women had been drinking, and they were crying and shouting," Sexton said. "They were clearly the antagonizers, and Mr. Frank was kind of minding his own business." (She said Ready also upset another passenger, calling him "Santa Claus.") Finally, the parties calmed down and remained quiet for the rest of the flight. (Sexton was offered some complementary wine for her trouble.)

Said Frank: "It reminds me of the joke about the woman who's in a restaurant and Clark Gable's there. She complains to the waiter, 'Clark Gable is annoying me.' The waiter says, 'He's not even talking to you,' and she says, 'Yes, and I find that very annoying.'"

Barney Frank: GOP "decided apparently that they benefit from virulence, hatred, disruption"

By GottaLaff

http://www.shewired.com/Images/Articles/24663/24663_TopNews_frank1.jpg

Earlier, there were disruptive shouts of "Kill the bill!" from a protester in the House gallery. How did the GOP respond? They applauded, cheering him on. Aren't they the perfect role models for our youth?

Barney Frank had a thing or two to say about that embarrassing display:

You have dozens of Republicans standing and applauding and cheering on a guy who was disrupting the proceedings and resisting court officers. It’s really disgraceful.” [...]

"These clowns are out there encouraging a violation of the law. They’ve decided apparently that they benefit from virulence, hatred, disruption."

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), downplayed yesterday's Tea Tantrumers' racial and anti-gay slurs and their spitting on African American lawmakers.

Another fine American.

Barney Frank was none too thrilled with him, either:

Any movement in which Steve King and Michele Bachmann are among the leaders is probably not going to meet high standards for civility or coherence,” Frank said.

VIDEO: Tea Party protesters mob Reps. Lewis, Carson, Cummings, shout slurs

By GottaLaff

UPDATE: Apologies if the title is misleading. It was meant to mean that there is a video, and more. The TEXT talks about the slurs. The video shows the protesters only, not the specific slurs mentioned in the text.

At today's rally, things got ugly... even uglier than usual:

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "faggot," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

Be proud, Tea Baggers. Family values, patriotism, compassion: all missing.

Bigotry, racism, hatred: all present and accounted for.

Barney Frank says that the White House "has been consistently committed" to ending Don't Ask Don't Tell. Good. It can't happen soon enough.

Here's the latest:
Military issues are always done as part of the overall [Department of Defense] authorization bill,” Frank said, insisting that this has been the strategy for overturning the policy all along. “'Don’t ask, don’t tell' was always going to be part of the military authorization.”

Frank said he has been in direct communication with the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, and other congressional leaders about the strategy for ending the 1993 ban on gays serving openly in the military. [...]

Once the bill is passed, even if it hasn’t yet taken effect at that point, the president could justify a stop-loss order because it would no longer be the law -- it’s just a matter of time,” Frank explained.

In the same room? Sarah Palin, Barney Frank to headline Gridiron Club Winter Dinner

By GottaLaff

Gay Jewish Congressman v. fancy pageant walkin' Wasilla Assembly of God Quitter:

Palin, the outspoken 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, will be the Republican speaker at the Dec. 5 gathering; the equally outspoken Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee is the Democratic speaker. A just published biography of Frank is titled, Barney Frank: The Story of America's Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman.
If she decides to actually honor her commitment and, you know, show up, this will be one interesting night. The Gridiron Club winter dinner will never be the same.

Health care reform: Short and sweet

By GottaLaff

Hal Sparks was on the Stephanie Miller Show today, and he explained what we get with private health insurance in an easy-to-understand way:

You make payments on your new car, but when you go down to the car lot, they refuse to hand over what you thought you bought. That's right, you don't get the car you paid for, despite your good-faith investment.

They take your money, you're left with nothing.

Barney Frank was also on. He told a story of someone who needed help fighting Big Private Insurance after having paid in and then being rejected. Frank said he couldn't do anything, but had it been Medicare-- provided by the government-- he could have stepped in on her behalf.

Two great examples that should clarify a few things for those who may still be confused.

UPDATE: Hal Sparks had made another analogy, and it slipped what's left of my mind. I tweeted him, and he remembered it:

House Dems may resurrect 'cramdown' bill

Oh dear lord, let this happen. Much more articulate and reasoned explanation of why the cramdown bill is so important here.

House Democrats may bring up a highly controversial bill that failed to pass Congress earlier this year that would empower bankruptcy judges to rewrite mortgage terms.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said on Wednesday that if the financial industry does not make strides in reducing the number of foreclosures, he would consider pushing for the bankruptcy bill.

(snip)

The industry met with Obama administration officials on Tuesday to discuss ways to improve efforts to reduce the foreclosure rate that continues to dog the housing market. They aim to produce 500,000 loan modifications by November.

"People in the servicing industry and in the broader financial industry must understand that if this last effort to produce significant modifications fails, the argument for reviving the bankruptcy option will be extremely strong, and I think there is a substantial chance that the outcome will be different," Frank said in a statement.

Video- Barney Frank: Bill O’Reilly ‘a little needy’

Snort, ahahaahaha. Oh good lord Barney kills me.

Rep. Barney Frank’s (D-Mass.) decision to appear on Fox News’s “The O’Reilly Factor” last Wednesday, his first appearance on the show since the pair’s now-infamous October 2008 shouting match (O’Reilly: “You’re a coward.” Frank: “You’re too dumb to understand.”) left many in Washington wondering why Frank would risk a repeat performance with the notoriously antagonistic host.

ITK posed the question to the lawmaker, who answered matter-of-factly, “For the same reasons I’m talking to you. Because I’ve got to make sure you get it right the first time, and frankly, I didn’t want [O’Reilly] distorting my words in my absence, which he’s been known to do.” Asked if anything about the interview surprised him, Frank said, “When he asked me if I was happy, that surprised me. Because he seemed to be a little needy.”

Ron Paul, Barney Frank Introduce Hemp Legalization Bill

By GottaLaff

http://www.rense.com/1.imagesF/hemp.gif
Why this hasn't happened yet is beyond me:

Sponsored by Reps. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) and Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the bill would allow U.S. farmers to grow industrial, non-psychoactive hemp, which manufacturers use for everything from soap to shoes to car upholstery. Current law allows hemp to be imported, but not cultivated domestically.

See that, psycho-naysayers? "Non-psychoactive".

Ron Paul:

It is unfortunate that the Federal Government has stood in the way of American farmers, including many who are struggling to make ends meet, competing in the global industrial hemp market. Indeed, the founders of our Nation, some of whom grew hemp, would surely find that Federal restrictions on farmers growing a safe and profitable crop on their own land are inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee of a limited, restrained Federal Government.

Nine additional House lawmakers are supporting the bill: seven Democrats and two Republicans.

VIDEOS: Rep. Michele Bachmann questions Geithner & Bernanke, Barney Frank cuts her off

By GottaLaff

Check out Geithner's facial expression as he is forced to endure Bachmann's babblings, and it hits him that she's an utter lunatic.

But my favorite part is the last 20 seconds or so, during which Barney Frank essentially tells her to shut her big pie hole:

It seems a rerun of School House Rock is in order:

In today's installment, Michele Bachmann saves us from a sneaky Chinese and Russian plot to achieve world domination through a global currency, but reveals that she was not at school the day they studied this in sixth grade.

VIDEO: Barney Frank calls Scalia a 'homophobe' in interview

By GottaLaff

Love that Barney Frank:

Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank called Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia a "homophobe" in a recent interview with the gay news Web site 365gay.com.
Hey, if the robe fits...

The Democratic lawmaker, who is gay, was discussing gay marriage and his expectation that the high court would some day be called upon to decide whether the Constitution allows the federal government to deny recognition to same-sex marriages.

"I wouldn't want it to go to the United States Supreme Court now because that homophobe Antonin Scalia has too many votes on this current court," said Frank.
