Former Bush and Clinton FEMA officials plan to press the Department of Homeland Security to stress the need for a public education campaign about the Mayan calendar's prediction of the apocalypse in 2012. No, not that they believe the world will end during President Obama's re-election year bid, but they see it as the perfect hook for a campaign about disaster preparedness. Don't laugh. Vera Chan, a Web trend analyst at Yahoo, says searches for "end times," "2012," and "apocalypse" surge any time disasters occur.

On May 1, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) announced — with almost no explanation why — that he had put a hold on President Obama’s nominee to head FEMA, Craig Fugate. [...] Today, however, Vitter announced that he’s lifting his hold. He said a letter he received Monday from FEMA officials assured him that the agency was working hard to resolve an issue related to reconstruction delays that resulted from the agency’s “interpretation of rules that prohibit federal financing of construction projects in flood zones.”About time. WASHINGTON — A Louisiana senator is stalling Florida emergency management director Craig Fugate's nomination as head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Fugate had sailed through his nomination hearing and Monday cleared the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee by a unanimous voice vote. Republican Sen. David Vitter said, however, that he'd blocked Fugate because of concerns he has with FEMA.
"I have a hold on the FEMA nomination because I sent a list of hurricane recovery questions and projects to FEMA, many of which have not been adequately addressed," Vitter said in a statement. "I'm eager to get full responses and meet with the nominee immediately."
The hold — which comes a month before the start of hurricane season — was reported in CQ Today, a Capitol Hill newspaper, which noted that Vitter's home state "bore the brunt of the botched agency response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005."

President Barack Obama says he plans to name Florida's state emergency director to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency. [...][Craig] Fugate previously served as Florida's assistant director for emergency management for nearly five years. Fugate has been praised for his efforts steering Florida through numerous hurricanes in the past decade.
Let's hope FEMA can be restored to what it was back when it earned my eternal gratitude after the 1994 Northridge quake.
