Mid Day Distraction

My very first memory as a child was my Grandmother & Mother freaking out over this, the tornado sirens blaring and having to spend way too much time in the basement... Vid is nice and kitschy though. More here and here.

Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Arneson dies at 61

I spent many happy hours with this man's invention. Gygax died last year.

MINNEAPOLIS - Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy game and a pioneer of role-playing entertainment, died after a two-year battle with cancer, his family said Thursday. He was 61.

Arneson's daughter, Malia Weinhagen, said her father died peacefully Tuesday in hospice care in St. Paul.

Arneson and Gary Gygax developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys. It eventually was turned into video games, books and movies. Gygax died in March 2008.

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun.

"But my dad never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."

Memory Lane

If your cable company carries WGN out of Chicago, at 12 noon EST today they are going to be playing the old shows Ray Rayner and Friends, Garfield Goose and Friends and Bozo's Circus. GREAT stuff, especially if you've got kids around that need to be amused.

On December 28, 1953, Chicago area kids were introduced to the whimsical story of Suzy Snowflake "tap, tap, tappin'" on every windowpane, seen on "Garfield Goose and Friends" then on WBBM-TV. Like "Hardrock, Coco and Joe", Suzy too was brought to life by the stop-motion animators of Centaur Productions. Norma Zimmer was Suzy's voice and the song was sung by The Norman Luboff Choir, a premier studio group who recorded with well-known artists, such as Frank Sinatra and Harry Belafonte.
