According to a couple of sources in the know, First Read says there appears to be a working short list of about six names for President Obama's Supreme Court pick.

The co-frontrunners: Diane Wood of the 7th Circuit, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Merrick Garland of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Obviously, folks can slice this list all they want: Five are women; one's Hispanic; one's male; and all are in their late 40s or early 50s, except two (Wood, 58, and Garland, 56). Keep an eye on Napolitano. For this pick, it would be surprising if Obama named someone he didn't either know well or trust personally. Wood, Kagan, and Napolitano all fit this bill (Wood taught at the University of Chicago with Obama, and Kagan and Napolitano already have top slots in the administration). As for Napolitano, remember that she endorsed Obama early on (despite Emily's List pressure to do otherwise). And from people familiar with the president's thinking, he's been as impressed with Napolitano as anyone in his cabinet. They click. That matters..."

Pete "WMD In My Pocket" Hoekstra says he'll run for Michigan governor

This is one of those times I'm very happy that my area gets alot of Michigan political news. I can see the ads now. Remember, Pete is the ranking member of the House Intelligence committee that twittered his CODL to Iraq's location back in February. Man's a freaking genius.

Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra says he's running for Michigan governor.

The 55-year-old from Holland made the announcement this morning on WJR-AM's Paul W. Smith program.

Hoekstra said he plans to file formal paperwork this afternoon in Lansing. He said the state needs a new vision.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm can't run for re-election because of term limits.

Washington Times Admits To "Breezy" Language in Michelle Obama Piece

I'm really surprised this got past me, but good on Citizen Jane for calling the Moonie Times on the carpet. Good article about the event here, Moonie Times version here.

We told you yesterday about the Emily's List petition to the "The Washington Times," about a "Times" story that referred to a Michelle Obama/ Jennifer Granholm event as a "girlie show" and an "estrogenfest." We also reached out to the "Times" to get their take on the story.

We just received a call from David Jones, the managing editor of "The Washington Times," who gave us the following comment:

"We think the story about Michelle Obama's efforts to campaign for women's votes was an important one and was fairly told, but some of the language that slipped through the editing process was too breezy and could be misconstrued as stereotyping.

"We have taken steps to make sure such language does not slip through in the future."

Mich. governor sticking with Clinton for now

Ok, I'm breathlessly waiting for one of my Michigander friends to explain this one to me. It just seems excessively slavish to Clinton, imho.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm isn't switching her support quite yet to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Granholm and Lieutenant Governor John Cherry both endorsed New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton last October. They're among seven Michigan Democratic superdelegates who backed Clinton.

Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said Thursday that, while the governor has made it clear she'll support the Democratic nominee, she won't make a formal statement supporting Obama until after Clinton announces a decision on her campaign.

Clinton plans to hold an event in Washington Saturday to thank supporters and urge them to back Obama's candidacy.
