WASHINGTON (AP) -- A multicolored terror alert system that was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks could be getting an overhaul -- or could be eliminated entirely.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is expected to appoint a panel Tuesday to reevaluate the system, a senior administration official said.
The five-tiered system that goes from green, which signals a low danger of attack, to red, which signals a severe threat of attack, has proven to be confusing at times, and critics say the different colors are too vague to deliver enough information to be useful.

Heck, Bush found the system useful enough when he wanted to boost his approval rating.
was it ever below blue? i can't remember a time where bushco wanted us relaxed enough to have a low risk. remember, saddam and osama are in your neighborhood, trampling your flower beds and toilet papering houses!
This is terrorism, pure and simple. They used it to jerk our fear up and down like a yo-yo. Throw it out and shoot the stragglers.
awp, it will never go to green for the simple reason that no one would ever be brave enough to declare that we are basically safe from any and all terrorist attacks (which is how green would be interpreted).
Not only does it basically invite someone to attack you, when it does happen you look like an ass.
Yeah, and my amp goes up to eleven.
Clancy, what's the point of having it then? It's basically saying "oh yeah we can get attacked at any time but if we're 'guarded' we won't look so stupid." If we get attacked, even at red level, we'll look stupid cuz it meant our intelligence failed, no matter how Alert we were
awp, I don't support the terror alert system. There really is no point to it other than to scare the hell out of us. I thought that noting out that one of the levels was completely meaningless made that obvious, but perhaps I should have stated it clearly instead.
It would have been better for the government to basically educate us to the fact that: a) it could basically happen at any time, and b) we'll try to let you know if we hear something ahead of time. Otherwise, if c) an attack happens, and d) they didn't say anything before hand, I think it's pretty obvious that we were caught with our pants down. I don't really need some color-coded chart to tell me that.
Wow. There are a few editing issues in that last comment (not to mention some pronoun switching). I hope it wasn't too difficult to follow. Ugh.
I can't wait until we go back to green; and children will sing and we can be 100% safe and cancer will cured.
Without looking: define and order high, sinificant, and severe. Now give them their correct color red, yellow, and orange. Now develop a scenario that would be orange and not yellow.
I bet there isn't a simple minded Elephant out there who operates on more than black or white scenario's.
I ask, can you you really define life with five easy to use color's???
