Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday signed into law tight new restrictions on access to abortion in Arizona, imposing a 24-hour waiting period on women seeking the procedure and requiring that minors first receive written, notarized consent from a parent or guardian. So if you're downing a few beers at the ol' watering hole, carrying deadly weapons "fireworks" is dandy, but sparklers? Ooo, watch out, they're a real threat. Yeah, that's logical.
The Republican governor also expanded the rights of gun owners by allowing those with a concealed-carry permit to take their firearms into establishments that serve alcohol, but she cited wildfire concerns in rejecting a proposal that would have legalized the sale of small fireworks in the state.
For abortion opponents, Monday's bill signings were long-sought victories.
One by one, similar measures had appeared on then-Gov. Janet Napolitano's desk for six years. And, one by one, she vetoed them.
So, perhaps no group was more excited than social conservatives by Napolitano's resignation in January and the ascension to the Governor's Office of longtime abortion-foe Brewer. Their enthusiasm was palpable Monday.

Um, would it not violate one's privacy to require a notary to sign off on their private medical documents? If they're going to impose a shitty law, couldn't they at least do it in a way that won't easily be overturned, even by the most conservative of jurists?
Other brilliant gun-related ideas for Gov Brewer to consider:
1) Issue a mini-pistol to each baby born in AZ.
2) Allow convenience stores to sell ammo.
3) Authorize teachers/professors to keep guns in their classroom desks (Oops... they were already advocating this one... sorry).
4) Allow gun store owners to sell alcohol.
Can anyone else offer up a few?
TL, on #2: "Allow"? How 'bout "Demand"?
Lessee......telling someone that they "have to sleep on it" before they make a potentially life changing decision doesn't sound like such a bad idea.
- would assume that the concealed carry law is like other states have implemented, you can carry but you can't drink if you're carrying.
Just like you "can't" drink and drive?
Good point Alison. I will tell you that I wouldn't risk my permit by having alcohol on MY breath while carrying.
I will agree that I'm not sure that having a day to think about it before having an abortion is a bad thing. I don't agree with notarized parental consent for an abortion though. The teen having an abortion was old enough to have sex on her own and should be allowed to make her own decision about her own body. If a 17 1/2 year old is pro-choice but has anti-choice parents, she can't have an abortion, but if she were six months older, she could?
Well I guess that settles it I will not be going to any bars when I visit Arizona.
What about the reverse scenario Alison.16 year old wants to keep the baby, parents make her get an abortion.
Also shouldn't happen. The woman carrying the baby should be allowed to make the decision. That's why I'm Pro-CHOICE. The ability to choose what you feel is right for YOU.
So......if you believe abortion is wrong you are "anti-choice". But if you believe killing a baby is a viable alternative, then you are pro-choice?
If you believe abortion is wrong, don't have one. I have never heard anyone advocate forced abortions (although perhaps they have and I am unaware of it). If you believe NO ONE should be allowed to make that choice for themselves, you are anti-choice.
If you believe aborting a fetus is a viable alternative, you are pro-choice.
Have you been to Arizona, ain't much to do other than sex in the AC and shooting each other in the desert.
He haw he haw
Most people that have abortions have already thought about it... they don't just wake up that morning and go get one!
I don't care if they've thought about it or not. It's their body, let them do what the hell they want to it. Last I checked, there's no mandatory one-day waiting period for facial reconstruction surgeries or appendectomies, why should the legislature single out one medical procedure over another? Definitely sounds like a clear violation of the equal protection clause, doubly so since this obviously has a disparate impact on women seeking medical care.
You want to chose, then make the choise BEFORE you get pregnant!!! The new gun law does not include bars, only restaurants. In Arizona we don't believe in the government controlling us, give every one a gun and stupid people will die young!!!
Nope, Denub, I'm pretty sure it's still the woman's body AFTER sex too. So, I'll still let her decide what she wants to do with it.
I like the idea of a one day waiting period for plastic surgery!
