Dem. Rep. David Obey: CIA Records On Briefings Not Accurate

Piling on:

Yet another Democrat in Congress is alleging that the CIA included incorrect information in its records about past congressional briefings on interrogation policies.

Rep. David Obey sent a letter to CIA Director Leon Panetta on Tuesday saying that "in light of current controversy about CIA briefing practices," he was "surprised to learn that the agency erroneously listed an appropriations staffer as being in a key briefing on September 19, 2006, when in fact he was not." [...]

The letter makes Obey the fourth Democrat to allege that the CIA's record of which members of Congress were briefed on the Bush administration's enhanced interrogation techniques contained factual errors.

Bob Graham, as posted here, is one of the four. Jay Rockefeller is the other.

All told, the testimonies of these three Democratic officials bolster the case made by Speaker Nancy Pelosi that the agency's own account of those now-controversial briefings is misleading. Pelosi -- like Graham -- has insisted that members of Congress were kept in the dark in the fall of 2002 about the Bush administration's use of waterboarding on terrorist suspects.

But let's get back to who ordered the torture in the first place, okay? That would be BushCo, aka what one might call "the responsible party".

The Repubs are making a serious strategic error in their hounding of Pelosi.

It cannot work out for them because even if they're correct in what they allege, it doesn't affect the root issue which is that BushCo tortured.

Additionally, if it turns out that they're wrong about Pelosi, then a bunch 'o those hooligans are ON RECORD saying nasty, ad hominem things (i.e. about plastic surgery).

If they had ANY smarts, they'd be totally trashing the Bush administration and legacy and distancing themselves from it.

Instead, they're embracing it.

Panetta's acting like a republican apologist lately. He ought to use his head and accept that his department isn't perfect. That lying is part of their everyday routine. So stop defending the CIA and start looking into who was at fault and see to it they don't see the light of day again. D.
