The state of Hillary for State

Allow me to state the state of Hillary for State:
Two Obama advisers have told NBC News that Hillary Clinton is under consideration to be secretary of state. Would she be interested? Those who know Clinton say possibly. But her office says that any decisions about the transition are up to the president-elect and his team.
Why mention that the decision is up to Obama? Isn't that a given? It may simply be a figure of speech, but why wouldn't be up to him? Who else would it be up to? It's a phrase I've heard before, and I always have the same reaction. Anyone? All those silly questions aside, I'd love to see Hillary in some cabinet position.

Other Democrats known to want the State Department post are Sen. John Kerry and Gov. Bill Richardson. A possible compromise choice would be former Sen. Tom Daschle.

Of course, any decision about Kerry, Richardson, or Daschle would be up to the president-elect and his team. Snerk.

I didn't mean to sound feisty, I really have heard that phrase used a lot, and it seems superfluous.

Think of it as someone's way of saying "There's only one President-Elect at a time." Snerk.

It isn't just up to Obama. It is up to him to make an offer ... and then it is up to the other person to accept.

It would be interesting to see if Clinton would take a cabinet position. She's got a very safe seat in the Senate ... and she could presumable stay there for many, many years, much like Ted Kennedy. She'd certainly have more influence internationally as Sec of State, but her time in that role would be limited.

This move would be consistent with Obama's approval of a previous administration's Cabinet made up of a "Team of Rivals."

Lincoln's Cabinet was comprised of people who at one time were his opponents. In admiring this choice by Lincoln, Obama said, "whatever, you know, personal feelings there were, the issue was, 'How can we get this country through this time of crisis?'"

Obama is truly "Country First."

i so do not like the fact that so many people from the clinton years are being considered for top roles in obama admin. why not tap into new fresh blood as america has tapped into obama. please president elect let's see some fresh new faces with fresh new ideas.

Anon, I wish you'd been part of Comments down thread. We had a whole discussion of this. Try checking down and see if you can find it.

: )

I kinda remember that discussion. Obama's administration needs experienced people that know how business is done. And congress would prefer experienced people i think, rather than all new faces. Experienced people know traps and how to get things done, thats what Obama wants... to get things done.

eh.

Yep, Jonas. That was the gist of it. Plus, he runs the show, he's not Bill Clinton, and he likes to surround himself with people who don't necessarily agree with him...

There was more. Oh well.

Yes, that is why he will become on of the very best presidents in USA as well as one of the greatest leaders in this world.. hundreds of years from now we will see him as a leader like Lincoln himself, and other leaders. Not just American leaders.

Somebody in Sweden is having trouble sleeeeeepinggggg....

Would that be you, Jonas?

I understand the arguments for Obama reinstating Bill's cabinet, but surely you can also understand those who would like to see a little more CHANGE?

All along Obama campaigned on the promise that he was going to "shake-up" things in Washington and so far he's been pretty safe and conservative in his cabinet picks. I trust Obama and I'm willing to let him make his choices and see how it plays out but I can certainly understand the concerns of those who expected to see some new faces in an Obama cabinet.

As for Hillary, I'm not a fan and would prefer not to see her in the cabinet. How much more Washington insider can you get?

I agree about the change part. But what I've been saying is, give him time. This is just the transition team. He does need people to fall back on, and who else is there? There's only been one other Dem team in office recently (or not so recently): Carter's.

I think Hillary would be fine in some post. She's smart, and even though I don't always agree with her, she could do a good job given the right opportunity.

Unfortunately, Obama needs a couple of insiders on his side, but I trust he knows what we're thinking and won't let us down completely.

He's not perfect, and the expectations are unrealistically high at this point.

Let's give him a chance before we get too concerned. : )

I doubt if Hillary would give up the autonomy of building her seniority in the Senate for service at the pleasure of the president.

ppl keep saying Obama needs 'experienced' ppl who knows how Washington is run. If that is the case, why isn't Hillary the Prez or McCain? What was the whole line of 'Change We Can Believe In'....more like 'Change we Can All Recycle'.

Just bc you have experienced, doesn't mean its the right kind 2 move this country and the world forward. Having said that, I like Hillary and would not mind her in such position even if I still cannot trust her or most of the ppl currently surrounding Obama's transition 2 power.

I doubt that Hillary will take this position. However, I may be wrong. Whatever decision Obama makes, I stand behind him 100%.

Please consider someone else. We chose you and we want new faces to help you accomplish the change we can believe in!

I still luv Hill&Bill

I think she'll be an excellent Secretary of State. She's tough. She knows world leaders, she knows the people in the senate, the military. She is learned and probably thought over what this job entails having run for presidency.

However, I doubt that the story is true and I wouldn't want to be disappointed. There are too many good senators vacating their seats - Illinois, Delaware, Alaska etc. I doubt if President Obama will let another good senator go.

It would be hard for Obama to put Hillary in as Sec of State... She carries too much "Bill Clinton" baggage for that position... On the otherhand, Sec of Health, Education would suit her fine... but that's not a big enough position for her ego. So probably we'll see her stay in the senate, make a martyr of herself for staying there, and maybe, in twenty years, she'll be a justice on the Supreme Court. D.
