"With so much at stake, and time running short, [Virginia Republican Party Chairman Jeff] Frederick did not feel he had the luxury of subtlety. He climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden: "Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon," he said. "That is scary."Grammps can put on the pretense of tamping down the hate-mongering all he wants, but it's too late. A fuse has been lit. Let's hope there's not an explosion. Here's what happened next:
"And he won't salute the flag," one woman added, repeating another myth about Obama. She was quickly topped by a man who called out, "We don't even know where Senator Obama was really born." Actually, we do; it's Hawaii. This is why Obama will win Virginia. Voters, for the most part, detest this kind of contemptible, dishonest character assassination (I even hestitate to use that word now). Gramm-pa and IWRC are vile candidates who have lost themselves the election by underestimating America and overestimating what passes for their own so-called judgment.

Sadly, Virginia proper is starting to sound more like West Virginia -- which ironically is starting to swing to Obama... But what a bunch of rednecks mixed in with the good people of Virginia... D.
"Does the truth lie halfway between say, slavery and abolition, or between segregation and civil rights, or between communism and democracy? If you quote Dietrich Bonhoeffer or Winston Churchill, in other words, must you then give equal time and credence to Hitler and Joseph Goebbels? If you write an article that's critical of John McCain, are you then obligated to devote an identical number of words to criticism of Barack Obama, and vice versa?"

Good stuff.
John Hodgman:
BUT WHAT'S EVEN MORE startling is that the Ayers conspiracy theories and "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" dog-whistling that was once left to rumor spams and whisper campaigns has now been taken up, OFFICIALLY, by the candidates themselves.
THAT IS TO SAY, McCain/Palin are essentially attacking Obama with BLOG COMMENTS.
Amazing to see how far the McCain campaigned has sunk.
Chris, wow. Perfect.
I know, right? It's like they're taking their cues from Teddy.
Here's the link to Hodgman's blog:

This just really depressed me...Sigh.
Thanks, Chris!
McCain/Palin have created a firestorm. John Lewis was absolutely correct in his comments.
The fall-out of this strategy:
1 It is bringing out all the racist bigouts, ignorant and low-information voters susceptible.
2 We need to work hard to erase the effects of these people (increasing vote through fear) and can't assume we are in a position to win.
3 The country is divided and no matter who wins I fear there will likely be violence -- at the polls, and once the election is decided.
Each day is a ticking time bomb. I hope and pray I am wrong!
so much for criticisms that John Lewis "went too far" in his remarks. It seems the campaign will have to ask for yet another GOP party chair to step down.
The "Hate Talk Express" has officially run out of control, and it demands every decent person act to stop that bus NOW!
you know, you've lost the election when the leadership start speaking like conspiracy minded white supremacist.
What the f'k happened to the Republican party? They are more like the the British National Party of the UK and other European neo-nazi groups.
Why hasn't anyone asked McCain campaign why commercial pilots retire at 65 and we have a 72 year old candidate whose cardiac stress test and cardiac cathertization results are not public
