Poll shows Obama up 7 points in Ohio

I blame Cliff.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A new poll suggests Barack Obama has a seven-point lead over John McCain in Ohio.

The Columbus Dispatch says Sunday that Obama leads 49 percent to 42 percent among likely voters in the important battleground state.

The newspaper's poll was conducted Sept. 24-Oct. 3 by mail among 2,262 likely Ohio voters. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

(snip)

Although both are attempting to persuade voters that they would bring about the change America needs, the survey shows that Ohioans are buying that message more from Obama, by a margin of 10 percentage points.

As always, my hero Frank Rich gives some straight talk today.

Loving this 7 point lead. I've long thought that O needed at least six points to counter the GOP's vote stealing.

I like the number, but I want another poll to back it up. Mail in polling is not very accurate.

D'oh?!? Wow!

I do think it likely we will win Ohio. Especially because the Democrats hold important state offices this election which makes it very hard for the repubs to cheat.

I'm hearing this morning, once again, what the candidates need to do in the debate on Tues. And the pundits keep saying how it's well-known that the format is one in which McCain excels and Obama does not. (they've forgotten that some of McCain's Greatest Gaffe Hits come from townhall-style meetings) They're setting the expectations for Obama really low.
I disagree with them; Obama has a lot of experience taking questions from crowds and his answers thus far have been detailed and specific, as opposed to McIck's meandering "I'm gonna clean up Warshington" shit.
I predict that this time next week we're going to be doing a lot of WooHooing about the polls.

Canavassed for Obama in WI yesterday. Lots of Obama supporters and lots of undecided. Looks like he is getting the middle class vote there. Hope this is truly representative.

Frank Rich's column is a bit terrifying.

I think the contrasts in the debate will also be a physical one again. Obama should look spry and energized while McCain will not project hope in talking about the economy. He has no solutions. He has no answers, maybe he can play the harmonica for the talent portion of the debate.

7 Points is great because it doesn't include all the new registrations since the Primary (and perhaps not even the ones in the primary)....Also these polls of "likely voters" are biased toward McCain as they assume that young people (18-25, or 18-30) will not turn out because they didn't in 2000 or 2004...or that blacks won't turn out in good numbers...

With Obama in the primary those under 30 turned out in higher numbers then those under 65 which is unprecedented in the annals of American history...

States like OH and PA the "undecided voters" don't make up 7% of voters as the polls say, it is more like 25%....In these states the economy is so screwed up so many voters are beyond race, age, party when choosing a candidate and Obama will win on the economy....

McCain can't win without Ohio, that is very clear....

Other polls have polled Obama at +8 in OH like Quinnapac poll....With all the voter registrations and getting youths and African Americans to turn out that is probably correct...

My hope is that Obama can climb just 4 points in the polls in OH and FL and PA in the next month as McCain can't win back that many points...
