The event was much smaller than the morning rally in Virginia Beach, where McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin appeared. Fewer than 2,000 were attendance in the college’s gymnasium.More like a train wreck. And McCain gave essentially the same speech as he did in the morning.
But at the beginning of the event, McCain indicated that he would take questions from the audience. “Before our conversation,” he said, “I’ve got to give you some straight talk…” — signaling his intention to talk with supporters.
But when he finished his speech, he abruptly left the stage, “Rocky” theme music blaring from the PA system. All indications were that the rally was over.
The audience stayed put for a few minutes, presumably wondering, as did reporters following the campaign, if the candidate was going to return to the stage and take questions.
He did not. And the audience left.
Rumor had it that the event was originally scheduled as a town hall meeting; McCain’s daily schedule showed an hour set aside for the event. [...]
[T]he abrupt end to the rally was a bizarre moment that left more than a few reporters wondering aloud if this campaign has become a rudderless ship.

He's lost it, in more ways than one.
he just needed his nap.
you know how old people are.
Teehee!
Hah-hah! (Think Nelson on The Simpsons)
I think he was barking up the wrong trees in the "Old North State"...
There's an old saying I've heard all my life, which refers to UNC-Chapel Hill. I hope it will also represent our state in this election ---
"If God isn't a Tarheel, then why is the sky Carolina Blue?"
Would like to at least see it on the electoral college poll maps turn "Carolina blue" (leaning Obama)... but ultimately BLUE on the Election Day map.
Funny, I got an email from the Obama campaign yesterday that was a letter from the former long-time men's basketball coach for UNC, Dean Smith, noting his support for Obama.
There's a good network of support for the Obama campaign in NC. I just keep this mantra going: Carolina blue! Carolina blue!

Oh my, this IS difficult to watch-- much more so that I thought it would be...Perhaps he was in a hurry and forgot, but that doesn't explain Palin's absentmindedness or stupidity or both...
I almost feel sorry for him.
If he hadn't been such a jerk and if Palin wasn't so awful....but he has been and she is, so I don't feel sorry for him.
I meant, "much more so than..."
Evers, I don't feel sorry for him at all (either). He's a grown up and he created this mess.
The only difference between the old McCain and the newer one is that he's been under the microscope more these days. Now he can show his true colors 24/7. And this is the result.
I guess that would be a Ghost-town Hall meeting?
Hope you get more clear air up your way, GL. :)
I wonder if he is not feeling well these days. Maybe he had an urgent need to visit the bathroom. No disrespect intended, happens to everyone.
At the town hall debate, I think he was wandering around because he was feeling uncomfortable physically.
The chairs they provided were too tall and he couldn't easily sit down.
Not an easy task for a 72 year old with all his past injuries to stand in one spot for 90 minutes, even on his best day.
