Bill Kristol: Colin Powell to Endorse Barack Obama

There we go, Laffy grabbed a screen shot!
Hahahaha. Warning, FOX link.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Weekly Standard Publisher Bill Kristol told FOX News exclusively on Thursday.

“He may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,” Kristol said, citing inside sources. “For whatever reason I think he has decided he’s going to endorse Obama. I think [Powell] has a high respect for Senator McCain, they go back a long way.”

Couple quick things. First, why would insiders in the Obama campaign be leaking to Bill Kristol? Also, when you go to the page Gotta got the screen grab of and click on it, it goes nowhere. The good link came from Kos's diary. And Powell's person said uh uh, nyet, not gonna happen. So what is the reasoning behind Kristol saying this?

Is this a good thing? I'm not sure.

It's a bizarre thing. I don't get why Kristol would want to tout it.

GottaLaff said...

I think it's a mixed bag. Some people still respect him.

It wasn't good enough for him to just shake hands and call a press conference? Onto the Convention Hall where he could make one helluva lalapalooze speech that would have the Republicans gasping for air, mmmm seems to have a hint of Powell looking for redemption for himself personally. The popcorn time will come watching the RNC spin attacks on this cause it reeks of more than one Catch 22.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Powell endorse Obama -- he's been hinting around at it for some time.

But I don't see him speaking at the convention. I doubt he would get a very warm reception from the progressive community. Don't forget that he lied us into war in Iraq on the basis of his personal "integrity."

Sorry Powell that your GOP Masters don't need you anymore. Boo Fucking Hoo. We don't need you bigoted kind here in the Dem party.

Adrienne said...

Mainsail--you hit the nail right on the head. This would give Colin Powell the opportunity to reject Bush and McCain for lying to him in the FIRST place.

For Obama, it might beef up his foreign policy bona fides, by giving them the air of legitimacy.

Hell, I don't know. I'm not a psychiatrist, I just play one with my friends and family.

GottaLaff said...

There's nothing legitimate about a Secretary of State who lied to the world.

Now, why'd I have to be drinking my iced tea when I read that?

Now, I gotta get tea stains out of my white shirt...

Desperate cry from Kristol to become recognized as a news person. He's been marginalized for the past ten years... He's more a laughing stock inside the beltway than a respected newshound. He's a joke and evidently so is the news he broke. D.

For any of you idiots who dont stop watching Countdown and Hardball on MSNBC and try to actually research yourself every once in a while; here's something for you to know. The Bush Administartion is as innocent or guilty about the Iraq War as is the Congress. Whether the war was actually justified or not, I cannot say because I, like you, are in no position to say.
However, I do know that the CIA told us that Saddam Hussein was building WMD's. The now-defected Iraqi head of the county's nuclear program said that in the 1980's they were researching building a bomb. Whatever evidence the CIA showed the White House, they also showed the Congress. Then, the CONGRESS VOTED to go to war. (Many morons forget that Bush doesn't have the power to go to war w/o the approval of the Congress).
In conclusion, you can be angry at Bush for this war if you have PROOF it wasn't justified. But, then you also have to be angry at Congress for having an equal say in it.(White House= 1/3 of Fed. Govt; Congress also =1/3) But whatever you say, you cannot blame Colin Powell for any of this at all. He can't declare war, he has no power over anything to do with the military. Be angry at the person even us republicans hate for his carlessness, Donald Rumsfeld.
(FYI- he was the secretary of defence, Powell was the secretary of state.)

P.S.- I am a middle class person who lives in New York. I find it funny that democrats call us rich and bigoted; when you guys have people like: Clinton, Obama Edwards running for pres(VERY RICH) and assholes like "Rev." Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who use race to their advantage, even when it isn't appropraite to be brought up. I live in New York- and I will tell you that Clinton has done nothing for this state. I am not partisan, I just hate liberals because they're rich but cry they're poorer than republicans. I like republicans and democrats, as long as they're conservative. That's why you dem's need more Evan Bahys and Tim Caines. They win white house elections. Get rid of the Kerrys, Clintons, Obamas and Edwards'. I guarantee Obama will lose because he's liberal; not because he's a democrat or a radical.

GottaLaff said...

Anon, I won't even bother to dignify that with a response.

I will tell you that, if you do choose to come by again (which I doubt), keep it shorter. We edit lengthy messages after one warning.

And always keep it civil.

One more thing: Do your homework. You are factually incorrect on many issues. If you insist on ranting, rant intelligently.

Anonymous said...

I couldnt help but ranting to the stupidity above.
First of all- I do my own research. Do you? If you do, great. Tell me what I am wrong on and correct me.
Also, I kept it quite civil. I find it funny that you say that to me, but not to someone like Bucky who throws out the F bomb and others who flat out make no sense at all.

chris said...

I'd be up for Powell if he stood up and apologized for knowingly lying - 'cause he knew that what he was saying wasn't true. He argued with people in the CIA prior to going before the UN. He argued about the NIE on Iraq and the findings of Blix, Ritter, el Baredi et al...and should have refused to give the speech. Maybe if he comes clean, he could get a bit of respect back.

Adrienne said...

Hey, Gotta, why wouldn't that person use a name of some sort? That bugs me.

"I'm not partisan, I just hate liberals."

Isn't that like saying, "I'm not dumb, I'm just an idiot?"

Just askin'...

GottaLaff said...

Anon, maybe if you'd read what I'd actually written, you wouldn't be so defensive.

I said "always keep it civil". I didn't say you hadn't been. It was just a warning, since so many trolls get nasty and vicious.

I will not engage in an argument with you.

I don't do that.

I'm flattered that you stopped by twice. You must enjoy the blog, and for that I thank you.

Pat said...

I cant wait for the first debate between these two. Both of these candidates are very unusual nominees for their parties. Also, Obama does best in front of a teleprompter while McCain does great in a town hall Q&A type setting. I personally believe, based on previous debates, that we have the two best debaters from each party.

GottaLaff said...

Oh, and let me clarify: By "civil", I don't mean you can't swear. We all do here. I meant that we don't call each other names, or get otherwise nasty.

Adrienne, in all fairness, I don't use my real name (I think I'd get fired by my school principal), but yes, it seems that the trolls usually go by "Anonymous".

Bucky said...

To borrow a phrase, "Is our conservative children learning?"

Sadly and obviously not.

Logic is such a bitch, isn't it?

GottaLaff said...

Pat, I've seen Obama knock it out of the park without a script. And if J Sid is their best debater, then they're in big trouble.

Anonymous said...

Well gotalaff, I do very much like this blog and I thank you for not getting agressive. As for adrienne, I would like to explain that there is NO liberal party. Therefore, I am not partisan. I would gladly vote for an Evan Bahy for president, and I support any conservative democrats or republicans in the Congress. Being in NY- I have seen what damage the liberals have done. Eliot Spitzer and David Paterson have been the worst governors- doing nothing but raising our taxes to the highest in the country while getting NOTHING done in the most corrupt city in the US- Albany.

JoeinGeneva said...

I hope that Colin Powell endorses Obama for anything other than it will force the media to ponder and ask why Powell endorses Obama over McCain. All McCain has against Obama is his "is he ready to lead" BS. Let McCain squirm in answering why a past Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State for a republican administration chooses Obama.

Patrick said...

Everyone here can disagree with me-that's great and it's the democratic way. But the next step is to enlighten me with the truth. Not just say what Keith Olberman says and Chris Mathews spits at us, but actually give me detail.
As for the anonymous thing, I have said I am from NY. I will also say my name is Patrick. So, Ill now be going by Patrick.

GottaLaff said...

Anon, thank you too. We're happy to include any point of view here, as long as it's "friendly".

We don't have to agree. We do have to behave. ; )

Bucky said...

But the media already has the answer to the question, Joe. They will suddenly remember to notice that Powell is black and that explains everything.

GottaLaff said...

Patrick, thanks for the name.

Please understand, I won't argue point by point. Others will, and if I get worked up enough, I might. I'm just not up for it.

However, please also understand that none of us here (and we know each other well) simply regurgitate points. Most of us aren't even Chris Matthews fans (I know I'm not).

I do appreciate Keith, but I always post before I watch him, and to my surprise, he often pops out with the exact wording I've used!

Anyway, I love New York, but still don't agree with you. : ) You pretty much know my "truth" if you read my stuff. I don't need to restate it here. That's what my posts are for.

On a happier note- who does everyone think the Veeps will be. Recently, I've heard Kerry as a possibility for Obama. I think it would be disastrous for him, so I'm hoping for Kerry. However, I seriously think Obama will pick a blue collar, mid west democrat like Evan Bahy. But, I'm not sure if Obama woulf really want a conservative democrat as his #2, when his views go left of him on things like abortion and other things.
As far as McCain goes, I think it's harder to predict. My guess: either former PA governor Ridge, Lousianna gov Jindal, or former candidate Mitt Romney.

JoeinGeneva said...

bucky, I hope they do since it will have the effect of exposing the bigoted cockroaches to light.

GottaLaff said...

I don't do speculation.

I'm always wrong.

chris said...

Ridge would be a disaster - what with the duct tape & plastic bags will keep us safe crap. Romney would be worse - two well-connected, rich white men calling a man who got thru college on scholarships & student loans "elitist" and not-quite American. The question is which would you like to see as president?

As for seeing "what damage the liberals have done" - me, too. Social Security, Federal and State Unemployment insurance, Hoover Dam, the Civil Rights Voting Act, the abolition of poll taxes, the minimum wage and child labor laws, the TVA, the CCC, The Family Leave Act, etc., etc. Not to mention that those founding fathers, without whom there wouldn't be a United States of America were - you guessed it - LIBERALS! Yup - breaking from England was a radical, liberal notion!
So, speaking just for me, I'm damn proud to be following in the tradition of the 12 generations of Americans who came before me in being a left-wing, golden rule, LIBERAL!

GottaLaff said...

Damn, that was good, Chris.

Bucky said...

What Chris said!

[And I'm glad to see you got registered!]

Thank you, It's been a fairly shitty day and I needed to unload without pissing anyone else off.

[and thanks for your help, Buck & Gotta. You may not think you did much, but you did, and you didn't laugh, which I appreciate]

GottaLaff said...

I've had some fairly shitty MONTHS lately. I can relate.

Listen, I am the worst. I can't pull that stuff out of my head the way you did. I'd have to research everything first, and then write it.

I don't know why I can't retain that stuff. It's not like I'm not aware of it all. : )

chris said...

It's my BA in History finally paying off! (yes, I'm an accountant with a BA in History. Prospective employers frown...)

Oh my! KO asking if Georgia thought it had "bought" McCain and then going thru some of the statements McCain made after being lobbied 49 times (!) by Randy Scheunemann's firm. KO's hitting him hard on this.

GottaLaff said...

Well, someone has to!

Wow, after reading all the back and forths on this one, I feel like I just went to a WWF Smackdown. I have to admire Anon for hanging in there. And knowing Gottalaff as well as I do, I know how much homework she does... and not just with her teaching... But Anon, hang in there. You'll find the folks here are really very well read up on issues... It's not just a vent with recycled ideas flowing through. It's high brow air conditioning. Thanks all. D.

GottaLaff said...

Thanks, David. : ) I've never been fond of arguing back and forth, and I don't pull facts out easily. I always need to refresh my feeble memory, for some idiotic reason.

You'd think I'd have it all at my fingertips, but nothing ever seems to stick that long.

Paddy said...

But what about ME?!?!?!?!

Damn, I always miss the good fights.

GottaLaff said...

You need to keep up with all these comments. We needed you here!

Anonymous said...

I hope he sits this one out. He can support him. But no speeches and campaigning. They will say that Powell endorses him because hes black which feeds into the stereotype. But I am black and would never vote for Collin Powell. He is a Conservative.

GottaLaff said...

I hope so too, Anon. You make a lot of sense.

It is important Sat. night for Obama to make clear that no one is PRO ABORTION,but that It is not the Goverments role to dictate what a woman does with her body. This is a free country.
